    Weather Forecasts

What does everyone find works well for getting accurate forecasts for high country for example Canterbury high country.

    Cheers

In my experience you really need to watch the forecast regularly during the week before you go to see how the picture is changing as it is really only reliable within a few days. If the picture is relatively stable as with a large anticyclone then it should be reliable, but if it is changing daily then anything could happen.

MetService tend to overstate the weather in my experience in that they will say it is going to rain all day when in reality there are only showers for part of the day.

yr.no gives reasonably good forecasts but again look regularly to see how it is changing.

+2 for yr.no but i also agree with maintaining a watch over a longer time frame like a week or so before your trip. I use Metvuw Sth Pacific forecast charts to get the big picture, then yr.no and Windy (www.windy.com) to get more local data, along with the NZ Met service mountain forecasts. When you triangulate across 3 or 4 sources you get a pretty good feel for what's coming, and how things are likely to play out. ..... and then of course "shit happens", so go prepared.

None of them get it right, some better than others. Least of all the TV channels who need to throw away their pieces of sea weed and get fresh bits.

I have tried most apps. Some have beautiful graphics but poor forecasting ie telling me it's raining at my location when in fact the sun is shinning and vice versa.

The two I use now mostly are windy.com and metservice.com rain radar.
Windy.com has links to adjacent private weather stations which are useful. You get more accurate pressure predictions.

The one I did find reasonably accurate was the surfy one (name alludes me) but it was set up to surf beaches only.

Windy. Mainly for sea conditions/fishing, but hunting to a lesser extent. Not always 100%, but pretty good.

+1 for Windy, but I tend to use the maps on MetVUW and make my own predictions... also handy to print out the ones for the period you're in the bush for, so you know when to expect fronts to come through etc.

Good thread. I will check out some recommendations. I go to weatherwatch and mountainforecast which seem good. I also check river levels through various district council sites

MetService now appear to have taken down the old site - I get re-directed to the new one, and then find it hard to navigate.
I don't think I was my normal polite self when I took up their offer for public comment earlier in the year.

Yr.no for me , they have a few weather stations in the hills also which is handy , never 100 % of course but you get an idea atleast
