Make a purchase with NZ temporary firearms licence

    Hey all.

Myself and my fiancé have just moved back home to NZ after a lengthy stay in Australia.

We organised our NZ temporary firearms licence before we arrived.
What were wanting to know is are we able to purchase ammunition or firearms while on the temporary licence?

    All help is appreciated.

    Thank you

yep, go and see the local firearms officer, they can issue you with a permit to purchase what ever you need, take that form with you to the shop with your visiters permit and id, and your sweet.

You don't need a permit to purchase.

You can purchase any A Category firearm and as much ammunition as you want. There is no difference to a full license other than it's paper and only lasts for one year or upon your departure from NZ.

You are obviously still required to ensure that it is stored appropriately.

Your prospective Arms Officer may not like you being issued with it though:

    Police Arms Manual
    2.36 Visitors to New Zealand
    7. The Visitors Firearms Licence is specifically for visitors to New Zealand (ie: “Tourists”). It must not be issued as an interim licensing measure for returning New Zealand citizens or
    residents, or to prospective immigrants.

Mind you that's not law, just the official NZ Police policy. YMMV

    Hey all.

Thank you for the help so far. Right now we're not too sure how long we will be here. So we can make it all work out in the long run.
Now time to do some shopping.
