Just a heads up. Apparently there will be a news item re 1080 on Stewart Island on TV3 news tonight. I don't know any details.

Just seen it now on the TV. So much for doc doing their best.
    Bloody disgusting.
If that shit has been dumped there on Stewart, what the bloody hell else is happening elsewhere round OUR country.

    I'm disappointed to hear that.

My wife and I first visited Stewart Island in 1993 and what struck us back then was the bird life. It was best described as vibrant. We commented for years over the number of big fat wood pigeons we had seen - we had never seen so many in number nor so fat anywhere else in NZ. Fast forward to 2016 and we returned to show the kids. We were bitterly disappointed. I've seen more wood pigeons in the forests around here than we saw down there on that trip.

Clearly DOC''s efforts to increase the island's bird population isn't working and throwing out another dose of 1080 doesn't seem particularly orginal.

I genuinely feel sorry for the Island.

The news article was typically bloody sensationalist though. It was news worthy but completely ruined by the reporter's dickhead antics. DoC will have to body slam the contractor for the dumping. Good on the young fellah that brought the facts out to the public eye.

Good example of DoC's incompetent operational management and an indicator of the reality hidden behind their propaganda.

    This....
If this has been going on as a 'regular practise' (especially as an industry) it is rather concerning.

In the scheme of things a few 20kg bags is nothing when spreading tonnes but when concentrated like that it must have an effect.

Pure fckn lazyness is all it is. Now doc are putting distance in and are gonna hang the guy out to dry. Can't tell me all those other doccers and associated contractors haven't and aren't doing the same thing. They just havnt been caught out at it like this (moron fckwit dumbarse blah Norman barney) person.

Yes. It's not sensationalist at all because 75 kg would be sufficient to cover around 93 acres at the "normal" application rate. Don't get me wrong though. I don't believe the act of chucking this poison anywhere in our bush is anything but insane.

What I meant Woody was that there was no need for the reporter to go wading through the piles with his gumboots (that was sensationalising something that was readily apparent to even the most uninformed observer).

This is exactly why DOC use contractors .... so they can play the blame game, hang the contractor out to dry and claim it’s nothing to do with them. And continue with the same shit elsewhere

Terrible action by the contractor and on the face of it poor contract monitoring by DOC.

However, the news article was full of typical 1080 miss-information, assumptions and pseudo science.
