Dont want to be a wet blanket but as far as I am aware unless you are a US citizen I don't think you can even buy a firearm as you are considered and Alien.

I have brought one or 3 direct from the US but had to use the services of a licenced exporter, its not difficult however unless its for something special not available here it may not be cost effective

now if you are US citizen then as far as I am aware its a simple process to bring them home to NZ with you

I am sure its more difficult than it was in 1989 when I first visited the US and purchased a new Ruger No1 for far less than half the NZ price ...

However , I am sure its doable , with lots of perserverance.

Still like to hear from someone who has done this recently ;-)

Those were the days full of innocence and hope. In 1980 a friend purchased a Marlin Golden 39A at a Walmart and gifted it to me with a letter. I just flew into Auckland airport and gave it to the police while my permit came through. Put a lot of rounds though it over the years. Ahh those were the days.

As an alien, you can not buy a rifle over there, but you can legally borrow and use one from a US Friend or hire one .i don't remember if the hunting licence was mendatory or not for the use of one...but I sure had lot of fun shooting prairie dogs and coyotes with a mate rifle when I went to South Dakota .

Thanks for the assorted input guys.

I have a plan B if this all comes to nought , but I shall pursue this with the appropriate people untill such time as I cant make it work.

I know guys bringing stuff all the time, maybe they are getting around it as not whole rifles but full Ar uppers amongst pistol stuff parts etc. Just need all same permits like if you were importing but you get it yourself to bring through.

    Accessories... go for it...
But gun parts still need a state dept export permit at the minimum, so doing that you have a good chance at seeing the inside of a US small concrete room with poor room service!
See US Code of Federal Regulations CFR 123.17...

Yes, as I said. Same import permits as if you were importing. I.e export from US and Import NZ end.
