    Auckland

So IF, you were moving to Auckland, and north of the bridge (maybe working around hobsonville), where would be a good suburb to look for a decent house to rent or buy?

    Main requirements are -
    - great schooling for primary (will be first time at school later in year). A bit of a (from her mum....) gifted kid, so needs active teachers. This is the main driver for location. I'll put up with longer commute to work.
    - safer location from breaking etc... (I am a firearm owner... etc )
    - need garage/area for boat, so maybe not attached or compact housing.
    - easy access to a range......

    Suggestions please...

    Hobsonville, maybe Riverhead way ?
Helensville isn't bad, good little community, but a bit further out.
He nui to ngaromanga, he iti to putanga.

You depart with mighty boasts, but you come back having done little.
Sounds like a typical hunting trip !

As close as possible to work, unless you work outside of peak traffic hours. (which is pretty much 6.30am to 6.30pm).

It sounds like the main priority is the right school for your 5 year old and given the Auckland traffic you would need to be nearby the school. Do a little googling for schools that may suit the kids IQ, nothing worse than getting them enrolled in a school where there needs are not attended too because the teacher isn't skilled in dealing with that type of child.

If you have some tin you could go the private school way, most would cater for bright kids.

Even a little South of the bridge wouldn't be much of a hassle getting to and from your work, there are many options for your boat, if you didn't have the room at home there are a heap of safe storage places around Auckland that store boats etc. Become a member at the OBC in Tamaki Drive and park your boat there.

As for ranges there a a few choices - NZDA in Riverhead and Waiuku, I'm a member of both but prefer Waiuku because you can shoot during the week as well.

The biggest hurdle will be getting over the mental block of Auckland house prices.

Basically you will have shitloads of options and a heap a varying views on what to do so best of luck and hope it all works our for you.

Auckland is a pretty big place and how much $$$ is essentially going to make your decision, your missus will want to live where you can't afford of course, as they would in any other area of NZ, but hobsonville would be as good a place to start.
New range/club going in out Kaukopakopa pistol/rifle should be an awesome facility to promote shooting with some really proactive people behind it and what Auckland has needed. NZDA range is very restrictive on hours of use, access. Look on their website/calendar.

If schooling is the main reason for the move, look at Hamilton and Southwell school.
    Private but very good.

have a look at the part of Mt Albert around carrington rd. most of the 1/4 acre sections have been subdivided with infill houses, but there is a lot of 1/5 acre sections which cannot be subdivided,as yet. this can leave room for a boat and car. good access to the airport, city centre and traveling north you will be against the main flow of traffic both ways. But becoming very popular because of Carrington primary school, it has a male headmaster and some male teachers, not that males are better than female teachers but it gives a balance to the school. plus you are not far from ak nzda so if you cant go shooting because you will be so busy paying your mortgage, you can go talk to guys that can. good luck

Depending on how much you want to spend, either west harbour or "old" whenuapai. All the primary schools are pretty good and most of that area will feed into the new high school at Hobsonville.
