i live in an area with tons of the bloody thing because of the wetlands and trees
the hammer my dog when she sleeps outside to the point where i cave and let her in, I cant open a window without the room becoming filled with mozzies and the bastards drive me up the wall if i miss one when im trying to sleep,
and well the missus swells up like crazy and wants me to sort it

We had a candle out camping once, they honed in on the light and come out the other side a sizzled ball of frizz

    Light lots of candles?

You can get your house and section sprayed, cuts em down by about 75 percent or it did at our last house.

My Sons live up in Townsville and they get plenty of Mozzies too.

They carry nasty disease up there too like Ross River virus, Encephalitis and other nasties.

The council has inspectors that go round looking for any standing water around your house as this can breed Mozzies.
You can be fined for this too.

On top of spraying/fogging the section, buildings etc and removing standing water.

They always burn Citronella candles and Mozzie Coils.

Probably have a dozen or so going at any one time both in the house and outside on the decks along with several of those UV Light electric Blitz things outside the doors.

They also have a can of Tropical Strength Aeroguard on hand too for anyone who feels the need to give themselves a spray.

Seems to work ok for them.

    Cheers

haha iv been looking for an excuse for a flame thrower.
im sure with a dive tank and 20l of citronella I could rid a few square miles of mosqitos

Im not real keen to coat the outside of my house with Attack/mallathion/lorsban
iv tried the knapsack sprayer approach with ripcord which was very very temporary IE 10min controll

is there a mozzie plant that I can grow to discourage them? iv heard of them but really i call bullshit, but hell im preparied to give it a go

As mentioned, your only real hope of controlling them at their source is through the standing water.

At work we use a product called "nomoz" in standing water. It stops mosquito larvae from fully developing and hatching, and lasts for months in standing water. You could try this if there are some particular problem areas. Also removing any standing water that you might have control over...barrels, guttering, etc.

If you live near a large swamp then obviously you aren't going to be able to treat the whole thing .

Other than that, the only other options are zappers and sprays, etc. As for sprays, look for ones with the active ingredient, "Permethrin." You can find it in some of your typical fly sprays - Raid, Black Flag, Baygon, etc. This has a residual effect....that is to say that whatever surface that you spray with it will kill for a period of time. Days or perhaps even weeks depending on the surface and UV exposure, etc. The higher the percentage, the better.

Permethrin based sprays are what they use to spray the interiors of aircraft, and these are usually considered valid for a month.

Hope this is of some help.
