    Canterbury Tannerys?

Forgive me if I have asked before but my wife feels the need to remind me every six months that I promised I would make some room in the freezer and get some of my skins tanned.
Have a few Chamois skins and a big bull Tahr that I wouldnt mind having done.
Any rerecomendations on someone to do it? I saw a sign here in town (Leeston) the other day for Turners Tannery so I went in and enquired and he reckoned about $350 a skin... That seems steep to me....?? His work did look very good though.

350 sounds a bit heavy. I got quoted 150 for a jap up here

As a child my uncle would have me flesh all the possum hides an stretching them out on racks to dry before oiling with the brains boiled down, if we/I went shooting then I had to do the hides

I've had a tahr done by Bob Spain for $100 and a Red done by Russ Turner in Leeston for $350.
I am glad i spend the money with Russ. Its softer, cleaner cut and symettrical.
Sure Bob's cheap but he took 9mths and Russ did it in 6wks

    Get what you pay for.

Tyron doesn't tan the skins, he mounts them only. He gets Turners Tannery in Leeston to tan the skins.

Put them in a chillie bin or well wrapped and send them down frozen to animal skin tanning services, here in invercargill. Adam did an awesome job of my last red ($150). Hide was nicely soft after too. Well worth the hassle of freighting. He is well used to courier deliveries too.

    His ph is 03 217 1269

His website has all the info. I wouldn't look anywhere else

If you're going to have to drive to a local tanner, drive to the courier instead. You won't regret it

Yep same here, highly recommend. He's good at his job and efficient. About $260 for a bull tahr, $130 for a chamois/fallow/whitetail skin, when I got stuff done last year.
I'm drawn to the mountains and the bush, it's where life is clear, where the world makes the most sense.
