    Damn near need new undies

So today we went to the NZAHAA Christchurch branch Christmas shoot
Started with a .303 (mk4 no1 for me) shoot. Then a .22 shoot, which for me was a .22 smle trainer...which was a little more challenging in the conditions at the Handloaders Range.....then a BP shoot which saw al sorts of big and bad but again I stuck with a military theme and stuck with the 577 450 mk4.
Then there was a break in the proceedings so I shot the new to me 9.3x57 for a bit....then....then this happened...while the team went to sort the bbq before the shotgun shoot...one of the club members broke out the 458 lott built on a cz550 magnum action. Man that thing had a concussive energy even from the other side of the butts. But it gets better....this upstanding fellow...goes ...mate, you want a shot....sure I said...that'd be great I said.
Not thinking much more of it I followed his instructions settling in behind this lovely piece of engineering and impressive rifle. I fed in the 500 gn round closed the bolt and settled behind the sight picture...and this is where things went drastically wrong. As I gently caressed the amazing trigger, thinking nothing of having sat behind military grade 100 year old double stage triggers for the last 100 rounds, that stunning rifle kept to life in my hands.
It rattled my teeth and sent that 500 gns down range at 2700+ .
I hit the black a little low and to the left...but in the black...and now I need to go change undies and hope I didnt stain the range floor.
Looking forward to next months pistol shoot, where i will be better prepared for the big bad and impressive, and pack a change of diaper.

That thing shat all over my 458 in the recoil department. Only rifle I’ve ever fired that was unpleasant. Great fun though.

But you made it look like you were firing a 223 compared to the reaction from some of the others when they had a go.
    Overkill is still dead.

Maybe but you will have noticed I didn't ask for a second shot.
To have done the entire course with that deserved a medal at the least.

There was a visitor that turned up at our range a few years ago and asked if he could sight in. We told him to go ahead and use the 100yd zeroing range.
Particularly load booms got the better of us so we wandered over for a look see.
He was sighting in a 458 Lott, prone, in preperation for a buff hunt in the Northern Territory.
At that point he had had 2 Weatherby eyes and had blood streaming down his face. And, he still had a couple of more shots to fire to finish off. Maybe poor choice of scope with shortish eye relief?

He was generous enough to offer us shots. I had one shot standing......yeah definitely full on.

@Boxton like me you can add it your list of have dones.

458 lott is more like 2400fps with 500 grain. The big boomers are fun to play with.

    The 458 Lott is impressive

    The 450 Rigby is nasty

The 505 Gibbs is just bloody silly

The secret is to use light projectiles...sadly not a thing with the 505

A family friend used to run a custom cartridge business in te puke, specialising in dangerous game cartridges like 600 and 700 nitro express. Staying with them during school holidays was sweet.
