    Eketahunu sheep rustlers sentenced.

Two people charged with illegally killing, stealing and selling sheep in Eketahuna have admitted their roles in the rustling.

Debra Lee Ann Paulson, 47, and Hamish van der Wiel, 24, had pleaded not guilty to charges relating to the theft of 15 sheep from two lifestyle blocks in Eketahuna.

In the Palmerston North District Court today, they both changed their pleas to guilty after charges were amended.

Paulson pleaded guilty to one charge of receiving the sheep, and van der Wiel to two charges of theft of animals.

The sheep, many of them pregnant, were stolen on the night of July 1.

Their throats were cut and they were butchered where they died, with the heads and offal left behind.

Four people, one of them van der Wiel, took part in the killing and theft.

One of his conspirators, Holly Louise Marlow, made arrangements to supply the carcasses to Paulson.

Paulson then sold the meat, which was worth $2175, on to other people.

Paulson's defence lawyer, Mark Alderdice, said she got involved in the scheme due to her relationship with Marlow.

She had been helping Marlow, who was going through a hard time financially, meet mortgage payments.

Selling the meat was another way to help, he said

Defence lawyer Mike Andrews said van der Wiel played a lesser role in the offending, as he had not planned the theft and only killed two sheep.

While he had previous dishonesty convictions, he had managed to stay out of trouble since 2008, Andrews said.

Judge Gregory Ross said the offending may not have happened if Paulson had not offered to find buyers for the meat.

The killings had caused distress to the owners of the sheep, and people were right to feel "abhorrence" at what had occurred, the judge said.

Paulson was ordered to do 100 hours of community work, while van der Wiel was sentenced to 75 hours of community work and ordered to pay $468 reparation.

Two others who helped steal the sheep, Tyson Lewis and Jordan Hanson, have already been sentenced to community work.

Marlow will be sentenced later this month.

Them was the days and now they've rustled the sheep WTF!

I do hope that your other ball compensated adequately...............:>)
It was a confusion of ideas between him and one of the lions he was hunting in Kenya that had caused A. B. Spottsworth to make the obituary column. He thought the lion was dead, and the lion thought it wasn't.

I’m proud to say that my address was “RD3 Eketahuna” 20 odd years. I wasn’t a sheep rustler, but I dare say that my farm was an unwitting supplier of sheep from time to time.

Nah. We were north of Alfredton, so gravitated towards Pahiatua or straight down SH52 to Masterton. Played quite a bit of footy in Eke though.

Yep where did it go I was an old man of 28! Bought a very nice MGB GT out of the old fire station, off Barry Hoffman and sold a 6 head moulding machine to the guy that recycled the Rimu, had a shop in town and drank a few pints in the pub, good olde Eketabung

Wouldn't mine a dollar for every time I've driven thru Pahiatua, used to do heaps of shooting in Mauriceville, had two great farms to shoot on there, built a few wool sheds and covered yards round that area when I lived in Masterton
