Finally going to get to go to Vietnam

After missing out as a young soldier I am finally going to get to go there in June. Cambodia as well. I was gutted when after training to go, our government pulled us out but with a lot more maturity and the benefit of 20/20 hindsight I am not so worried anymore. That said I am excited as all hell as I have long wanted to see the country and experience the culture and this trip will put me over fifty countries seen in my lifetime.

Also glad your going for all the right reasons
Having been able to experience 50 different countries is definitely cool.

My wife wants to cycle through Vietnam.

    Unfortunately I don't cycle .................... unless there's a V-twin and a throttle involved

Have a good one @Rushy, don't drink the water and don't get short changed by the Taxi drivers.

    Cheers
    Pete

    Vietnam is an awesome place!

Only advice is get out of the big cities and visit places like Sapa and the old town in Hoi An.

You'll love it, the food is awesome, the people are the nicest of any I've met in SE Asia, I could go on and on. How long have you got there? I went for a few weeks in 2008, am ready to go back soon ( trying to make my missus think it was her idea for a honeymoon.)

Going in June, you're about to discover what stinking hot and humid really means. At least with a stomach attuned to Waikato you'll be immune to any bugs in the water hahaha

Only thing you need to know is dont stop when crossing 6 lanes of scooter chaos! Keep walking. Tuck in behind a local and match their pace.
Hoi An is worth a look.. and get some shoes made.
Hanoi is very Commie still.. but its the point for Ha Long Bay trips (worth doing overnight Junk trip)
Saigon - do Delta and Tunnels tours.
Book them in NZ before you go with transfer etc

Challange is to find beer cheaper than 17c NZ a glass.. that was my record.. 22c is pretty normal

Spanners has my missus been using you as a travel agent? We have a couple of days in Ha Long, doing the tunnels, Hoi An and the Mekong Delta and other stuff of interest. Being an old soldier I also want to see Danang.

Managed US5c a glass (it was hilarious getting shit faced drunk for a buck US), you just gotta get keep the locals as entertained as much as they entertain you, maybe chucking the remainder of my Baht to the old biddy in charge afterwards the first time helped, I dunno. I smoked back then, 10c / pack was the roundeye price, and US$3 for a 2.25l bottle of baileys for the hotel room just because it was three bucks

Reckon you're up for the tunnels @Rushy? Cu chi has been opened up a bit for us westerners, it's still tight for the over 75kg-ers..
