To flag or not to flag

On Rushys, that man of wisdom, prompting!
What does the current flag of New Zealand mean to you? I older and think much of our history in in our flag, things we cannot change, only add to.
I don't necessary like our flag design, but I like its history, and would not like to see it changed.
A black flag with a fern is, IMHO,representative of a country, we are surely deeper than an advertising campaign?
It concerns me the value of our nations flag is being treated so frivolously.
    But that's just my thoughts.
We might have another fight right here, under our flag! but it's been there before, hopefully it will survive again!
    Your thoughts are?
    Boom, cough,cough,cough

It represents who we are - Southern Cross and Union Jack. Recognised internationally as NZ for over 100 years
Replacing the Southern Cross with 1080 pellets

I like the one we have now. I think putting a fern on it is stupid, plus I'm not big on change.

The reasons people are using for wanting a new flag annoy me too, people saying they confuse it for the Australian one? Not the flags fault...NZ seems to be going full retard.

Probably the first Key initiative that I completely disagree with.

I would like it to remain unchanged. I think the fact that it is so familiar with others shows how we stand by our brothers for all this time and times to come.

At least they are having a referendum and not going straight to changing it. Whether they listen to what the people say or not though......

Thats what I liked about Switzerland : when an important decision had to be made, the politicos were obligated BY LAW to put it to the country in a binding referendum.

Can't see the Politicians here liking it too much though.

When we lived there we flew the Black and Silver (fern) on special occaisions with pride from our balcony. Everyone in the neighbourhood knew where those crazy kiwis lived ...

Speaking as an outsider, I have to agree that our current flag is a bit too much like the Australian one, and does get confused.
I dont like change for change sake, such as Telecom rebranding at huge cost (we pay in the end). But, I wouldnt object top seeing some of our well known and unique animal/bird species represented.

I think it is disrespectful to all our forefathers and men and women who fought for NZ to change it, or even want to.
I am proud of the current one and always will be. People that say it is too similar to Australia's cant count and are colour blind

They should change theirs as we have the biggest and best view of the southern cross

Should keep it the same. The problem with society is that people forget what they think is good now sometimes looks like shit in 20+ years. Think flared trousers and lamb chop sideburns.

This was thought to be awesome and cute and wonderful for the 1990 Auckland Commonwealth Games.

Change it. Don't believe the bollocks about it represents the history we've had under it. That is the nations history not the flags and will remain the nations history under a new one. Our soldiers of old did not fight for our flag, they were not that shallow, they fought for king, for country and for causes.

It is way too close to the Aussie. There have been a number of occasions where an Aussie has slogged his guts out for years to be the top of the world in his field and stood with his hand on his heart singing Advance Australia Fair as the NZ flag has been raised. Actually I must admit to a wry grin at that. We should have something more unique to us and distinctive like the Canadian maple leaf.

I'd like something strong and simple like the kiwi the forces had/have. Everyone calls us kiwis, we are proud to be called kiwis. Why not use it as our symbol?

Personally prefer the existing one but if the majority decide that it should be changed then so be it - so long as it isn't black! Of the alternative designs, this would be my preferred choice:
