Herald Article - Hunter jailed for catastrophic error

A Wairarapa man who fatally shot an Auckland hunter has today been sentenced to nine months in prison and ordered to pay reparation of $7000. Christopher Dummer, 54, had earlier pleaded guilty in the Wellington District Court to careless use of a firearm causing death. The former Wellington Deerstalkers' Association president was charged after Auckland builder Alexander Cameron McDonald, known as Cam, 29, was shot dead about 11am in Aorangi Forest Park on April 7. Dummer, who was in another hunting party, was only 16.3m away when he got Mr McDonald in his scope and fired once, shooting him in the head.

This is a tragic reminder to us all of the absolute importance of identifying your target.

I agree with you on the sentence Spook, the sentence seems exceedingly light in the circumstances and doesn't do anything to provide the victim's family with much solace at all. I would have thought that the courts would have siezed the opportunity to impose a far more severe sentence given that the man responsible should have absolutely known better than to pull the trigger. As to the wearing of blaze, American studies have shown that whilst it does not prevent these tragedies, it does serve to dramatically reduce them so I will continue to wear it at tomes like the roar.

I have just read that the judge also ordered that all of Dummer's firearms be destroyed.

Its an emotional topic for me so il keep it brief and try not to get wound up too much.
The sentence is a joke. Especially considering his former position.
I wear blaze in open country,it sticks out like dogs balls from literally miles away.
I try to only wear new bright blaze.
In the bush I wear whatever green/black/camo I have that suits the weather.
SOME blaze in low light(ie bush) when older can look kind of red,its no excuse for shooting at it.
Hence the only "blaze" I wear in the bush is the full on reflector strip yellow shit and thats only in the roar.

Condolences again to the family. Both for the loss of their son/brother/boyfriend and the slap in the face that is the sentencing

Lost for words 9 fuckin months im stunned , there's never any justice in cases like this. Dummer will only serve half and he'll be out for xmas back with his family , punishment doesn't fit the crime ( 16 meter's ) this sentence just isn't long enough ..the number of guys wearing blaze beanies shot in the head the past few years is very disturbing .

Not long enough, he totally failed to identify his target beyond all doubt and there is no excuse especially at 16 meters and pulled the trigger he should have known better especially with his involvement with NZDA where firearms safety is made very clear to its members. Why is this shit always happening?, I think it is time to actually have practical testing where it is critical to your test that you identify targets before pulling the trigger as well as practical demonstration of other safety rules instead of just the theory test and interviewing of other people that know you to screen your eligibility for a firearms license.
RULE 4: IDENTIFY YOUR TARGET BEYOND ALL DOUBT

When a judge values a human life at $7000, I am not really suprised at the 9 months.

IMO when anyone gets their fire arms lic they should do a compolsury firearms safty course under controlled conditions and iff they fail criticle parts of the testing FAIL.
