Spending a few hours with the young fella in the evenings this week,
We sanded down the stocks for a Rossi 243 we acquired off a good bugger of a forum member, plus a second shorter stock that fits the young master.
A few coats of outdoor timber stain to hide a few imperfections, and voila, Father/Son plinker/bush rifle once we put it all back together.
Barrel shortened and Gunworks suppressor (courtesy of another forum member) fitted to finish the deal.
A cheapie but ideal for the young fella to cut his teeth on.

Back in the day when I first started playing around refinishing stocks, a family acquaintance did a rejig on his. He took the top finish off, gave it a quick scrub back and got the blow torch out and gave it a light tiger stripe. Didn't polish it smooth as-still had a almost but not quite a woolly feel to it. This gets hazy now as I cant remember if he used tru-oil or linseed oil. I'm leaning towards the tru oil though.
Definitely looked different and actually had a good tactile feel in the hands.
Looking back it was sacrilege to do it to a nice little Remington 788 243 carbine but hey it was his gun. Cracking little gun by the way-that's another one id buy if I could-not in 243 though-got one of those.

I'm halfway thru tidying up the stock on my 788 in 22-250 . it was stained and varnished in some ugly dogshit brown muck. Am looking at using raw linseed to try and keep the blondish color.Name: IMG_20181103_095130.jpg

I'm at McMuck! On transport duties. First time in one of these joints since Dougie was here.

@kidmac42 not raw linseed! Used boiled linseed oil! That's what all stockers use. You would kick your self if after all that work you put the wrong stuff on ah
