    Hill training

Have a slight problem and wondering if you folk have had similar and found a solution...

Got a trip planned in 6weeks or so that will involve about a 1000m climb on day two, haven't seen a hill in 6months. Bit of a problem where I live at the moment. There is a small Hill that levels out at around 100m, other than walking up and down said Hill half a dozen times wih s heavy pack on are there any exercises / stretches / ideas to increase my Hill fitness?

    Cheers in advance

You could look into high intensity interval training, essentially you push yourself for say a minute then have 2min easy pace then another intense min and so on. The idea is that it teaches your body to recover.
    Good luck

Biking, and more biking. When I was biking 20k to work and back it was when I was my fittest and would leave my mates behind on hills. My bike ride was pretty flat, no real hills at all.

    Interval training.
Box jumps, lunges, step ups, sprints, skipping, squats.

Carry some weights if you want. Keep reps high 10-20

Do 1 minute or so of each, straight into the next one. Have 90 seconds to 2 minutes of rest.

You should be pretty poked in no time.
Chuck in a few runs and rides, rowing machine if you have one.

I like the idea of "Hill Training" but have found it totally useless. None of the hills I've commanded to "Lie Down" have lowered themselves to enable an easier ascent.

On a more serious note, I'm with Stud. On ya' bike!

I am going to give that training regime a go.

I got a rude awaking recently on a trip with Pointer to the Kaimais, and need to get my fitness up.

I've found only hills prep you for hills. But Stug has a good point about biking and I've found that certainly helps. Find something that has a similar breath rate as climbing, coz having fit legs is only half the battle as the lungs have to match.

20km is all the roads on the island lol but it could be done, don't have my bike but access to one... Might give that a whirl

Same experience with hills, calves just don't get the same work out on the flat. Lungs is going to be an interesting one.... Smoking is out the window so will see how that improves things

I'm trying to lose some weight and get fit for the hills myself.
Asides from stopping smoking and getting into the hills as often as I can I've started using a skipping rope. Bloody good work out, haven't been at it long enough to say if it's working or not.
