Home welding : gas rental vs owner bottle

Any advice ? Owner bottles going for around $600 from Ezi-swap

What kind of $ are you looking at for bottle rental per month ?

I think if you have a couple of jobs in mind that will burn a bottle you are better to rent but if you want a bottle on hand for whatever and it may not get emptyed in say 6 months or a year buy one.

I own all my own bottles and get my acetylene off Supergas and my Oxygen off a local independent supplier, dropped BOC years ago.
A smal plumbers set is what you want, cheap enough and if not in test get them tested not expensive

oxy/acetylene oyo bottles out of test turn up regularly on TardMe
old fire extinguishers (flat bottom type) can be had too

Take them to the grumpy old bloke in 16 Mohuia Cres Porirua

    Porirua Cylinder Testing Lab

In the past they have done a couple of Argon conversions from oxy cylinders for me and of course CO2 from extinguishers - haven't tried acetylene yet

Supagas refill them in Port Rd - you pay, they take them up the line to their base and refill then you pick up - was $300 for two Argon refills last time but that was a while back

    Supagas

    Strait Engineering
    53 Port Road

I bought a mixer off TardMe a while back that could regulate the ratio of argon to CO2 - cost 300 and seemed to work ok - welding with plain CO2 is easiest and cheapest but the weld sits up pretty high

How do you identify owned or rented bottles. I received a gas set and 'E' bottles from a deceased estate both bottles empty now and was unsure what to do.

They will have usually have owners name stamped in them or bar code tag if newer ones (Boc or air liqude etc) meaning you don't own them they do ,

They have a black plastic neck tag with a bar code. Are they now mine or is there a lot of rental to pay, been in my shed for 3yrs.
