    We had 21 kids in the house at the time.

    you know in the fire service we harp on about "smoke alarms save lives" ., and to be fair you actually would think the place would HAVE to have smoke alarms installed to allow that amount of people to sleep there , you can buy a smoke alarm with a ten year battery that is about the size of a average tomato , ... easily carried for next time ...

    Yep. Shit does happen.
    Upon leaving Rotorua I asked about alarms an were told it was all sorted. By owners.
    It wasn't.
    We had our own extinguishers but no good in such a small amount of time.
    My old man is ex fire service and I'm ex Police and we all knew better. All it needed was a nine volt battery.
    When it comes down to "luck". I don't accept half measures. Especially with kids.
    I was just grateful to return my own and other kids to their homes
    No fn good at all.
