"The hunter's horn sounds early for some, later for others. For some unfortunates, poisoned by city sidewalks and sentenced to a cement jungle more horrifying than anything to be found in Tanganyika, the horn of the hunter never winds at all. But deep in the guts of most men is buried the involuntary response to the hunter's horn, a prickle of the nape hairs, an acceleration of the pulse, an atavistic memory of his fathers, who killed first with stone, and then with club, and then with spear, and then with bow, and then with gun, and finally with formulae."

I liked this one until WH cut me down ha maybe its just funny to archers....ive done some minor editing.

Here I sit, up in a tree
With my bow right next to me.
    Waiting for a fcukn' deer
    Guess I'll have another beer.

    Another hour comes and goes
All I've seen is fcukin' does.
    Waiting for that fcukin' buck
Got some more beer in my truck.

Climbed down the tree to get my beer
Wishing I would see more deer
What a shock, there by my truck
Stood that big ole fcukin' buck.

    Lop-side Lisa, thats his name
His two horns are not the same.
One is big and one is small.
Soon will hang upon my wall.

My palms got sweaty, my heart beat fast
I aimed my arrow and though "At Last."
I let it fly at the fcukin' buck
And the bloody arrow hit my new truck.

The fcukin' buck just ran away
And I decided that I'd just stay.
But not to hunt, to drink my beer
In honor of that fcukin' deer

I made this up years ago for the long range team, and can only just remember it.

    Summer

Fire and smoke a billy heats
till morn chorus and sunrise meet
    footsteps fall a lookout found
    glassing dark then lighter ground
    Spotted coats are targets made
from a finer hand also welcome shade
    rolling sound lifts feeding heads
    townies slumber in their beds
hunter turns a glance at prey
    the others live another day
    off we go trek untracked
nettle bush and scrub we hacked
knife knows well none is lost
    fumbling some cursing frost
pack and meat and carefree way
    undestined path who's to say
    river swamp ridge and rocks
leaves in shirt seeds in socks
    men who losing city form
hunt and walk enriched the norm

Its a bit lame looking at it all these years later
A big fast bullet beats a little fast bullet every time

Yeah, it's a bit lame. Hell no, I like that. Conveys the senses really well.

    Woman prefer hunters

They go deep into the bush

    Fire more than once

    And eat what they shoot

    Studholms, Tussock, Spion Kop
    Thigh deep snow, glaring sun
    Makino, Middle, Veni Top
Ive had the odd good run

    'Noka, Ballard, Iron Whare
    Lifted pack, filled the mag
    Kiwi, 'Turutu, Rocks Ahead
The odd rainbow in the bag

So throw a handful of me
    When my walk ends
    Throw a handfful of me
In the places I know as friends

I want to hear the river
Where the brown lolls in the bend
I want to hear the roar
On the ridges end to end

Brilliant EeeBees. I am forming the opinion that there are not enough adjectives in the English language to describe your various talents
It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.
What more do we need? If we are above ground and breathing the rest is up to us!
Rule 1: Treat every firearm as loaded
Rule 2: Always point firearms in a safe direction
Rule 3: Load a firearm only when ready to fire
Rule 4: Identify your target beyond all doubt
Rule 5: Check your firing zone
Rule 6: Store firearms and ammunition safely
Rule 7: Avoid alcohol and drugs when handling firearms

Rushy, I am humbled by your generosity, thank you...at work today I got thinking about the Hill and such like...how you stop for a breather on a steep manuka clad ridge, lean on the old gun, the faint scent of gunoil joining that of the manuka vapours in the hot sun...came back to earth with a thud and realised it was home time...
