If only they had the balls

    Just read this on stuff

Personally i think it would be great for the whole country,
Its only 67ks in length so way more efficient then the current boats
Even if they charged $40 for a car is would be cheap, convenient and efficient

Is it time to tunnel across the Cook Strait? | Stuff.co.nz

Bugger that. Cut the cable, let the fish sink, problem solved.

Actually a tunnel would be a good idea and a lot easier done with the big boring machines that are used now.

Another couple points to consider is

-the Cook Strait is not a shallow sandy bottom and will provide technical difficulties making it much harder to do than the English Channel. Bearing in mind the English channel cost 4.7 Billion (NZ11.4) and with inflation and these difficulties increasing that it would be over $3000 per person in the whole of NZ. And I know it will cost much more than that. I think it would be foolish to think we would be able to do it for any less than at least double that considering the nature of the task. I do not believe for a second that this would be a priority worth looking at. There are other more pressing needs that money could be used for.

-Its hard enough now to get a resource consent to build a dam or mine anywhere where it cannot be seen. How much opposition will there be to a construction site that big somewhere it will be seen......

-The economics simply dont stack up. Even if we could afford the price tag, if we had that much money to throw at the cook strait, think how many fares it would pay for; 38 million free trips for a family of 4 ( in a country with 4 million people) That works out 38 trips per person in the whole of NZ. And the interest alone, even at today's rates would be an extra half a billion dollars that could be spent on education, or healthcare, or police. Or 1.5 million families could cross the strait FREE for every year at no extra cost to NZ.

Overall I have only one question. What has that fellow been smoking? Damn it must be some good shit.......

Don't think flooding the Manapouri tailrace with water and drowning all the people is much of a concern....

Build a plastic tube that sits on top of the rubble. Bit like an underwater scenic drive

Go for a bridge instead. In between the supports, you could install tidal power generators / whale burley makers.

A tunnel or whatever means would be cool. But realisticly. We still have un-sealed roads. And like tussoc said shit rural broadband.
