Just when you think you're tough

Tragedy at Tarawera yesterday with the drowning of a father and daughter from a kayak. Spent 2.5 hrs looking for them in 5-7 mtrs of water with a average weed depth of 3mtrs. Recovering both bodies was hugely satisfying but bloody hard psychologically on you when you have such trying conditions. Having a grieving Mother pleading with you to find her family whilst trying to get myself mentally and physically prepared to dive was one of the toughest things I have ever done one. Bloody rapt to be in a position where I could help this family recover their loved ones.

    you're a good man, @Gapped axe

Any death is tragic, but recovering the bodies of a Dad and his little girl ?? How tragic is that !!

There's probably a few of us with kids out there right now thinking that could be me .... and a those of us without kids similarly impacted.

But it must be pretty hard for you mate, so make sure you get yourself all the help you need to recover from this ...

You are a top bloke for helping out in what would be a very difficult situation. Such a tragedy when something like this happens. At least the two were found and recovered, which isn't always the case.

I take my hat off to you.

I was actually in town helping train new Volunteer fire fighters , my daughter included, when I got the call. After their training had finished the Principal Rural fire Officer brought my daughter out to me on scene. The first thing she did was come up and give me a hug and told me to take care, at this stage I was planning the last dive for the little girl and this strengthened mine and the other 3 divers. I will add that 1 of the divers is only 18yrs old and he impressed me very much.

Not the outcome that anyone wanted, my heart goes out to the family and friends.
Good on you GA. That is possibly the hardest thing any man would have to do. Breath deep and rest with the fact that you have helped the family to at least have some finality.

Like Happy I immediately thought that you would be involved when I heard of this tragic event. Well done GA, you and all those like you that step up when needed are worthy of all the accolade that you receive.

Quite satisfying when you do something you have been training for and have the results you did. Well done to all of you.
Keep an eye on the young lad and check up on him in a couple of days with a "one on one". I have a feeling he may be older than his age but you never know
