    Loud Commercials

When can we have this in NZ?

Federal Communications Commission (FCC or Commission) rules will soon require commercials to have the same average volume as the programs they accompany. In the Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation (CALM) Act, Congress directed the FCC to establish these rules, and they will go into effect on December 13, 2012.

I was under the impression it was a digital compression issue. The adds stored in a different digital format than the tv programmes i.e compressed and stored on a different drive. The format they are in causes them too come out at a higher lower quality volume.

Im under the impression they are deliberately formatted in such a way as to ensure they are louder than usual volume.

Im under the impression I couldn't give a fuck how they format it. I bet it is not rocket science to make it the same level especially TV3.

I cant speak for whats on to watch at home but I know that Sky tv is miles ahead of Foxtel or Austar here in Oz. The recievers look a bit like a mysky but thats where it ends.
Even the remote is the same but it would honestly have to be the most frustrating system I have ever had the displeasure of using.
Somebody severely under the influence of something hallucinogenic must have had a go at designing it.

It shits me how you are sitting in your lounge and then some bitch starts shouting at you to buy furniture or some prick starts shouting at you to buy Tyres. It has nothing to do with volume the bas.tards are actually shouting when they make the ads.
It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.

Kind of, it's actually to do with compression so there can be more dynamic range in sound.

This explains it in a patronising way

It's the classic it does sound loud, but technically when measuring the levels, they're the same level as the tv programmes.

That is a good explanation but I still don't like the ads where they shout from the get go.
