    Mapping NZ

    Hey all,

I'm just familiarizing myself with an online mapping app produced by a company called Esri and I'd like to hear your input on what you think might be useful to map so I could get some practice. I made a council location/weblink map for the SI to keep on top of job postings but I'd like to make something more complex and visually appealing. You can map just about any feature (point, line, area), relate information like pictures, links or videos to it and establish relationships between features that can act as 'tour' from point to point - pretty cool stuff.

    Anyways, SI Council Map:

Oh Jay you poor misguided individual. There isn't anyone in the South Island. You should have done the North Island. Map looks good though. If only it wasn't of a barren no mans land.

Rule 2: Always point firearms in a safe direction
Rule 3: Load a firearm only when ready to fire
Rule 4: Identify your target beyond all doubt
Rule 5: Check your firing zone
Rule 6: Store firearms and ammunition safely
Rule 7: Avoid alcohol and drugs when handling firearms

@Pengy I believe NZWAC used the developer version of the same software to create their map but a lot of what they have included on their map can be created in other software programs that we have access to at school so something similar to their map would be doable if the map files are accessible. I was thinking about trying to compile a map that would show:

    - The approximate current range of pest species within NZ,
    - the possible future range of pest species within NZ based on environmental features that support them,
    - and all huntable public land in NZ as an optional overlay.

Pest species might include: Rabbits, Hares, Possums, Turkeys, Goats, Ferrets, Wallaby, ect.

I have a 90-hour self-directed project next semester and that's what I'd like to do if I can get some support from DoC... Could look pretty good on my resume too aye?

Anyways, if you guys and gals have any idea on quick and easy stuff that I could practice with til then just dump your thoughts here.

You missed a couple of councils...

Mapping something like projected future spread of the wallaby population would be interesting, but it has probably been done already.

No. We have advanced ourselves to an elevated state of domestic bliss where everyone respects the rights of others and we co exist without the need for central of local government in a utopia without crime.

I dunno, I try to avoid the place! But I didn't see Southland DC or Gore DC either.

If you get bored you could add regional councils too.

    7. Avoid alcohol or drugs when handling firearms

Good judgement is the key to safe use of firearms.
