And these overseas companys have no accountability, they reap carbon credits while they decimate our waterways and oceans with runoff and slash and what do they do to counter these effects.....Nothing because our week kneed govt (both current and previous) wont hold them to account.

While I find the situation pretty sketchy (Foreign interests should only ever be allowed to lease, not hold title) I'm sure no-one was forced to sell it to an overseas buyer.
Money talks. That's the unfortunate way of the society/structure we operate under. Obviously no-one in NZ could stump up, or had any interest.

NZ owned companies do exactly the same thing without apparent repercussions.

Does it really matter who owns the land?...it is not as if it can be physically taken off shore.

No,can't be taken away but absentee owners with no accountability can tie up that land so it is worse than useless to us.
Producing nothing(except methane?) paying no rates and unable to be sold or bought.
It will be milked for carbon credits until trees are mature, companies will claim tax losses, until that runs dry then abandon it but not relinquish ownership.
If the timber is even wanted,we will be held to ransome on the price paid for it.
This is a MAJOR loose ,loose for NZ

The profit will go overseas, with very little benefit to the locals. While they may contract the grunt work to a local forestry gang (not guaranteed), certainly the product is going to be boated off shore (and probably sold back to NZ!!) there is fuckall nett benefit to the country. No doubt their deal is being sweetened with tax relief, and when they've fucked that patch they can sell it to some kiwi schmuck, taking the capital gain.

Yes but they and their children have to live with the damage to the environment where as overseas companies have no reason to care.

Try and buy some land in Japan....its a similar sized island nation.
Actually try and buy some (useful productive) land in any nation you are not a citizen of.....not many options out there.

And that drives prices up so people that actually live here/born here/generations here cant afford to buy land or live in their own country! That is the problem!

What is the problem with the profit going overseas?...so long as ongoing costs are paid here....any one going to Bali with the profits from their labour would come under your glare.
