Miami_JBT's Official "Ask Me Anything" since I'm a Florida Cop.

I've been a cop for 10 years now and 6 of those were spent in Miami. Yes the actual Miami of Michael Mann's Miami Vice.

So in this thread by all means feel free to ask me questions and I will try to ask them to the best of my ability. Be forewarned though I also asked questions in return.

How much range time is required as a minimum per week/month or is it self policed?

    Depends on the agency.

The State of Florida now requires officers to qualify once a year as the minimum standard. The course of fire is 40 rounds and starts from the 1 yard line and ends at the fifteen yard line.

My agency does the required qualification and then spends the rest of the day doing drills and training. We do it twice a year for everyone. I'm on the department's Emergency Response Team so I am required to qual more often. Four times a year and I also have a department issued rifle. That is a separate qualification. So are my two back ups.

What is the NZ Police requirements?

I'm sure someone else will confirm but as far as I know it is once a year here with the STG and AOS doing it far more often. I stand to be corrected.

AOS is the "Armed Officer Squad" right? Is that similar to the UK's armed police units or more of a SWAT unit like here in the US? What is STG?

    1. Really impressed with the amount of training that police receive, regarding use of lethal force.
With recent events in other cities/States, of officers using 'lethal force' in questionable circumstances, how do you personally view these incidents.
    2. Social media has a lot to do with the reaction of certain members of communities, where these unfortunate happenings occurred.
Does this place duty officers under additional, unnecessary pressure?
    3. There has been an increase in the size of 'under class' of most Western societies.
Do you see an increase in crime, due to folks financial situations, turning to crime as they are unable to access employment due to lack of education, opportunity for 'on the job' training, cultural mores/behaviours and (putting it bluntly) racial discrimination?
    4. Despite our egalitarian society in NZ, our society is showing increasing signs of heading in the same direction outlined above, in question 3.
    Cheers
    1. The majority of these police involving shooting shooting are justified use of force. Bad guys do bad things. When bad guys do bad things. Good guys shoot them.

    2. Yes, Social Media and the Main Stream Media is clearly putting my brothers and sisters in blue in danger.

    3. The majority of the underclass as you so call it is multi-generational welfare families. You have three generations now on the public dole. They don't work, they don't contribute to society, and they have had their egos inflated by a certain political party and it's members.

In the 1960s, President Johnson declared a "War on Poverty" and started the "Great Society". He completely revamped the welfare system in the US and since then it has been down hill. President Clinton didn't help in the 1990s either. And currently President Obama has blood on his hands in my humble opinion. Ever since he said "the police acted stupidly" back in the start of his first term it has gotten worse. During every event, he has sided with the families of criminals and this is after the evidence has come out that law enforcement acted appropriately. After Dallas, President Obama contacted the family of the dead criminals and he did not contact the families of the slain officers. When the musician Prince died. He had the White House bathed in Purple lighting to honor him. Every police union in the US has asked the President to do the same for Dallas and Baton Rouge. He hasn't lifted a finger.

    4. I view that the world is on the tipping point. We are either going to regain our freedoms or fall into an abyss of despotic control. Right now you have a social struggle between producers and takers. In the US, close to 50% are now on government welfare. When we reach the tipping point it comes crashing down. Socialism doesn't work.... if it did my family wouldn't needed to have fled Cuba. Venezuelans would not be digging through the trash for food. The USSR wouldn't have collapsed.

There is nothing like the unsanitised truth.

Q: Is there any racial tension between blacks and latinos in Fl? I see a lot of reports re BLM - rioting, looting, general civil unrest (tension between black and white), where do the latino population fit in in all this?

It dawned on me that with all that murdering and cash burying going on, many of the murdered individuals would have left a lot of cash buried.

We hatched a plan to fly to Miami, find the right neighbourhoods then run ground penetrating radar over the back yards while posing as service identification (normal use of GPR but it will see cash too).

Can I ask permission to do this?
My Father is in that documentary. He's one of the cops interviewed.

As for the cash.... gone. Every house in Miami has been flipped and remodeled at some point.

What is, or has been, the most emotionally challenging aspect of your job as a law enforcement officer?
