That's going to knock the central and lower north island economy somewhat!

Perhaps they are going to sell off their training land so that they can solve the housing crisis.

I don't think it matters where the training is done. As long as the training is good and creates the soldiers we want, then who really cares. Tekapo can be just as bad as Waiouru.

Imagine for a moment that planet Earth has an arsehole. Under that scenario Waiouru is a pile. I did ten weeks at Waiouru in 1971. I can confirm that soldiers of the future won't give a fat cats arse if their basic training is not held there as long as where ever it is held there is a mess hall and the beer at the OR's is cheap.

Having done a winter/spring basic at Waiouru, and lived and worked outdoors in the lower/middle of the South Island for 15yrs, I can assure you, its colder here than I ever got at Waiouru. And while I enjoyed a look around the Plateau, I do definitely believe a move like such has to be better for the Army, with increased jobs/opportunities for army families.

That is too close to K Road. The baggies would be in strip clubs every night of the week.

I did my Basic at Burnham in the early 80's.

There was a whole heap of us from the East Coast/Hawkes Bay regions went down.

    Cheers

I also did a winter/spring basic at Waiouru. No question there are colder places BUT more miserable? Maybe not as Waiouru has just the right mix of cold/rain/wind and don't forget volcanic grit. It is definitely a bad place to find a job or civilian transport (ie no airport and only slow busses and an even slower train). It will be a big loss to the area and I wounder if the intelligence and officer training will remain?

Yeah they would probably have to electrify the fences and post guards to keep them in at night!
