Just seen a bit on Breakfast FFS, not one bird killed with 1080.

What about all the tagged Kea on the Coast ??? .....Idiot.....

Can't get over the fact they have been using it for years & years it is so effective that they are using more & more of it... 500,000 Hectares this year FFS.

    More on Breakfast TV1 shortly...

Think we should start harvesting a few native birds for the pot before they kill them all?

    Nice one.
Had a kea survey man stay at our place about a month ago.
I asked him how the kea were and how 1080 had effected them

He said "was not too bad, last drop only killed 8 tagged birds."
I said how many were tagged.
    He said 17.

So you killed half of them?

    "yep, not too bad"

Mate a few years ago was living and shooting on the Napier - Taupo, said all the kiwi disappeared after a 1080 drop, from listening to them a night to nout.
I struggle with DOC's attitude of isolating itself as the only outfit in NZ that knows everything about NZ wildlife, the come with no ears, blinkers fitted and a know all mouth.
Nick Smith, what can you say? I thought he was an educated man, but they've got him into their fold.
Open up DOC land and get a bounty. on these animals you want to destroy

Colour me cynical but someone somewhere in the 1080 chain is making a shitload of money out of creating misery and death in our public forests. I share your sentiments guys, the continued and increasing use of this abhorrent poison is testimony to the fact that the programme is not meeting its objectives. Continuing to do the same thing but expecting a different result is dumb. Time for a change in strategy as you have suggested Maca.

The 1080 guy on Breakfast basically said hunters don't want 1080 dropped because they want to be able to hunt deer wherever, hunters are selfish was what I took away from it.

Does anyone know where else in the world 1080 is used with much success?

When you get a lot of like minded people who've already made up their mind on a subject and begin talking about it together you get a whole lot of unsubstantiated stories and they spiral out of control.

It's far from ideal but it's the best we have currently. Numerous independant studies have shown that doing nothing is worse than 1080.

There is a lot of scaremongering and pseudo-science around 1080, if you look at the broad facts and independently verified studies then you'll see a different picture to what a lot of people are trying to promote.

I always asked myself 'why would Forest & Bird support its use?', they have nothing to gain and everything to lose. Why does the Green Party and DoC support it? There isn't millions being made so as to silence all of those people.

The guy from Deerstalkers just showed why he was against 1080, and it wasn't because of the birds.

They're only doing 12%, of course they will have to keep it up, they aren't blanketing the entire country so what do you expect? A residual chemical that warns off pests for 50 years? If 1080 is that bad there will be a huge difference between the treated and untreated areas that DoC couldn't ignore.

I'm not pro 1080 but I would rather they do something, even if it has collateral damage, than to stand back and let the bush die.

I Agrre with Savage , there is areas that have problems that do need to be addressed . If thats with 1080 due to the cost or whatever; in part its still needs to happen ! AHH did I say that .
NZDA and others that feel strongly thats it shouldn;t happen need to change there attack ,
Its a case of comming up with the facts that it may do as alot say , ie dead birds , painfull death , etc etc .
In the case of Kea ,and other stuff . NZDA need to track say 100 birds in diffren area,s Robins , Kiwi , deer , possums , rats ,Kea, . After the drops in each case have the facts of what is dead or not , its never been done , it could be done . FACTS ...
    You cant change facts .
