    Phone for America

I'm off to America and would like to know the options for phone services while I'm there.
    I have a prepaid Samsung Galaxy Y.
What do you frequent visitors to America do?

I just took mine with me - on 2 Degrees - so just roamed - but never actually made calls - hotels had wifi so used that

Otherwise in Europe I got a pre-paid sim card -

generally just told people to viber or email me and I would contact them

Careful about text etc overseas - YOU pay for them to text you as well

    Just buy a local sim.

I thought it was free to receive text but not phone calls, things may have changed.

Just buy a throw away phone there. Or get a sim card. In the USA you pay to recieve calls. If you are there for a while and mates, family are there, calls within your network (verizon, sprint etc are free between mobiles)

Yea, the idea of trying to get around another county without a smartphone just sounds like making life hard!

I loved not having a phone while travelling. When I got back to the real world a few years later I had a Nokia with a colour screen as it's biggest feature, now have an Iphone supplied by work and I hate the bloody thing.

How terrible. You may have to talk to people then
