Plumbers and drain layers: Can you tell me what these are?

At the end of last year my wife and I bought a lifestyle block, in the paddock are about 5 septic tank looking mushrooms that are miles away from the house.
We know the farmer who originally subdivided the block from his farm and he didn't know what they were, just that they were required for the council to sign off the subdivision. He said that he had originally fenced them off and that there used to be a lot more of them, but the previous owner must've taken down the fence, and the stock destroyed the rest of them.

Between my limited knowledge on septic tanks and looking at the LIM report, I'm guessing that they make up part of the field drain.
Am I correct? Also why would they be required? I pulled of the sprayer looking thing under the cover and it looks to be filled with solids, poos or soil not I'm not sure.

I have never seen anything like this in a field drain before, and thought that usually just have perforated pipe buried under the surface.
I'd like to get rid of them if I can, considering half of them are already broken and I'd rather something buried that stock can't destroy/I have to fence off.

    Cheers

Looks like your location was Hamilton's previous tip site and they are methane gas breathers.

The use of PVC piping would indicate it is not ancient.
Maybe borrow a plumbers rod and do a bit of probing to see the extent b4 seeking paid assistance.

I'm neither a plumber or a drainlayer, but those are pipes.

I would hazard a guess,it's the drainage field and should be fenced off to prevent compaction and any further damage.

Or the previous owner was a prepper and you've scored yourself a bomb shelter

Looks like vents on a septic drainage field.many ways it could have been done. Normally pays to have fenced off. Would suggest that having mushrooms ( the cap like things) replaced for the broken ones would be s good idea. Potentially soils could enter and render the field useless. Could you get much from the council?

I take it that you are a drain layer or have been involved in making field drains?

I have been on many many rural/lifestyle/farms with old concrete septic tanks and have never seen vents (or what ever they are).
Is it common for a field drain to have vents.

I thought it was pretty standard to use perforated pipe buried in gravel and not require anything like my field of mushrooms.

I'd visit the council and ask for one of the planners to have a look through your property file with you.

@Beetroot the mushrooms are merely covers for the flush valves (which are the white pvc stems sticking up with a screw cap on top). Why these are above ground I can't explain as all my installers do these sub-surface with valve box lids flush with ground surface.
I can help. Send me a pm and we'll work out a plan.
