    Pocket cannon

    Hey guys
I wanna make something like this just for a bit of fun. Firstly is there any laws in NZ stopping me making/using it? Better still has anyone made or bought one?. Also where abouts do you buy small amounts of gun powder. All i can find is big containers. Much Appreciated

If it fires by law it,s classified as a firearm and should be proofed by an accredited gunsmith.Proof =double charge+double wad+2 balls. If it survives the gunsmith gives a number and his proof mark. I don't bother you can DIY. I have had only one turn into a pipebomb. It blew on the trunnions. Gun powder is easy to make but the burning speed can be a lot slower and burn dirty. Saltpeter and sulphur are available on TM. Ordinary BBQ charcoal gives you the last item.

"http://www.pyroguide.com/index.php?title=Black_Powder_Manufacture". This may help. I use the modified ball milling and CIA method, at the bottom of the page .it gives good results.I don't own a ball mill so I just use a mortar and pestle to blend the Saltpeter and sulphur. It takes a while. The trick is to blend the components not just mix them. Be fussy with the measurements. It's actually a pretty satisfying exercise.

A Canon are classed as an A cat firearm if it shoots a projectile.

Its classed as a toy if it is used as a signal cannon only (i.e. does not fire a projectile).

Serious Shooters sell Canon Fuse and Goex FFg Black Powder.

Here's the canon I made a year or two ago.

    Fun projects.

I machined the canon barrel out of a length of 4140 steel.

Made the rest out of scrap steel and a couple of tyres from supercheap.

    Cheers

What did you do to stop it rusting as it doesn't look like you painted it. Where do you get a hunk of steel like that?

I just wash it and oil it after each use.

CRC or WD 40 keeps the rust at bay.

the boys in the workshop were gonna chuck it in the scrap bin.

I said can I have that and next thing you know it was being sparked up out at the range.

    Cheers

The above quote relates to possession ONLY... use of any of the exempted items is a different animal and comes under a whole slew of different acts an regulations
