    Police rural volunteers

Anyone seen the huha (largely coming from police themselves it would seem) about this idea?

Seems the police are doing the same thing that Fire and paramedics among others have done and downplay the value that part timers can provide if adequately trained and managed. Seems very self serving at this stage...

I think weren’t overly behind the idea is like describing the last ice age as slightly chilly. Cahill just found something else to bleat about besides guns...

UK Police have used uniformed vollies as part of their operational (ie front line but not high risk etc) activities for some time. My impression from senior officers I interviewed some years ago was that they were a valued part of their community strategies.

I can't see any problem with the idea actually.....there would be certain tasks they could do quite well I don't doubt.

Cool. Get to keep AR and get a Tazer. But they better supply batteries for the Tazer , because I will go through a few.

The police are the only 111 "service" that's 100% Government funded. Are they running out of money?

Fire and ambo both survive because of good people volunteering, St John memberships, insurance levies, local council support, and (volunteer) fundraising etc.

Policy Enforcement/ revenue gathering: high priority
    Helping people: not so much.

Maybe they can set up 5k outside Twizel on those boring long straight roads with a laser rangefinder and shake down tourists for on the spot speeding tickets. 30% discount for instant payment, here's my mobile EFTPOS terminal...
