    The power goes off

"Happily" if thats the word for it crutching sheep when the power went off yesterday. The shed runs on a generator and the motors still running but no trickery was coming out. Checked the circut breaker and it wasnt tripped the 12 v winding is producing power but the 240 v is dead according to my multi meter. I assume its buggered but if anyone has an idea. Its a 6.5 kv chinese one about 8 years old so probably had a good go from it.

ARV - A technical term often used by Maca49. Will that do?

AVR is a, usually black, box that is sq or quadrant shaped in the back of the alternator, wires to the alternator, cheap to replace. You know what brushes are. Generators like you have will either have and AVR or capacitors, they are usually plastic type cylinders as you fit to a single phase motor

Ok thanks, what type of bushes? rose, scrub, hedge. If the 12v circit is still going I'll assume its not the bushes. Avr i now realise means auto voltage regulator, and i have the capacity to find capacitors so will have a look at that be nice to fix it if i can ut not to worried if i need a new one theyre getting cheaper all the time.

I scored a generator that stopped working and pulled the gen cover off and the black box has got hot by the look of it.
are they worth fixing as this one hasn't done much work.
my brother has my other one and that died as well but havn't sussed out why yet.
was hopping to make one goody out of two as both from the same factory.
    I think they are 5kva 240 v

jesus some of you blokes are cowboys. like maca said, pictures are key.

if you can find the avr try connecting 12v to the exciter circuit, this should give you around 240/400v, in doing so it proves that there is a problem with the avr.

but please don't do anything if your not sure about and read on the internet

Nice! your AVR looks like toast! If the windings are OK you can replace it, you then have to adjust it to give 230volts at 50 hertz, find a GOOD electrician!
