Rainbow Road - Hamner to St Arnaud

Has anyone done the Hamner to St Arnaud drive via the rainbow lately?

Gem and I are looking at driving this road next Saturday while we are on a long weekend trip down south. Will be driving my SWB Prado on KL71s. We'll take the camera and a picnic and make a day of it.

Anything I need to be aware of with it? Road conditions? I was going to call ahead and talk with whomever on the station as well - sort out who we meet with regards to access, signing onto their H&S, and paying the toll.

    Cheers,

Vehicle wont be a problem. I did it years ago with a van towing a trailer.

A few years ago some tourists went through at night in a camper. The GPS they were supplied was set to show the shortest route.

Yes I read about someone in a car that blindly followed their GPS up there in a snow storm...

Looks like some cool scenery though, pity about all the power lines!

Probably not the best time of year to be driving it for he scenery through the mountains but beggars can't be choosers and this is the weekend we are down there.

Went through it on my Prado 120 about 4 years ago and it was great. Cash to the administrators on the northern end and all good.

Don't think so, there is already a few shoots down south and the cost I would need to charge competitors for travel expenses would likely exclude the very people I want to attend... hence I will stick with NI events so I can keep entry fees at a realistic level

Send Happy a PM, as he went through a couple of weeks ago in his yellow peril. No dramas reported.

Happy said to tell you it is very easy going and you should have no problems unless bad weather hits.

We did have trouble with a Subaru wagon when one of the rivers came up. Was pushed sideways and almost off the side of a ford.

Been there, done that in a Suzuki SJ413... entertaining!

Unless the weather decides not to play ball I can't see us getting ourselves into trouble and even if the weather is great, being only the one vehicle, I won't be doing anything I think is particularly tricky!

It's an easy drive, nothing difficult anywhere. The hardest part will be obtaining gate access.

I figured it would be a reasonably easy drive. A good one for my partner, might have a picnic at Lake Tennyson.

According to the website the gates are unlocked daily through the summer period (subject to work on the station, weather, etc.) and so I am hoping a phone call a few days before will be sufficient to ensure we are aware of any station activities that might affect us or inclement weather about to pass through.
