    Rats!!!!

I hear they have just found rat foot prints on Tiritiri Matangi island (the island sanctuary that has been predator free for 25 odd years).
Haha. They think they can make the whole of NZ predator free by 2050 and they can't even protect one tiny island. It's a joke.
They will probably blame 1080 activists for releasing the rat.
Experience. What you get just after you needed it.

Shearer there is about as much show of New Zealand being predator free (by any date you care to mention) as there is of me catching a meteor on the far side of the moon tomorrow night.

They'll just change the rules to what they consider pest free , "pest free" wont actually peeest free , if you get my drift like smoke free its a percentage of what ever they make up

they shifted goal posts for being smokefree today so now have proven form......if they wanted to do that one they could do it and they know it...pest free different can of worms.

    Was’nt the Pest Free 2050 a National Invention ?
I agree that short of biological control of rat genetics it’s a pipe dream.
He nui to ngaromanga, he iti to putanga.

You depart with mighty boasts, but you come back having done little.
Sounds like a typical hunting trip !

It was predator free NZ when they started and I suspect it changed to pest because they kept publishing photos of Possums, deer and rabbits which are not predators. So this clearly shows it was an idea dreamed up by people who had absolutely no idea about what they were talking about. Thye should have, but clearly missed the mark.

    Predator Free 2050: Our work

One thing I can tell you, if it was possible to eliminate all the pests / predators anywhere, it would have already been done in Mackenzie basin. The agricultural sector there has spent way more than the Government ever will and they still struggle to control them. If they could have achieved elimination, I can promise they would have succeeded years ago.

Yes it was a National Party invention. Someones trying to differentiate one species of rat politician from another

Pipe dream? Add possums, mustelids, hares and rabbits. Unfortunately as much as DNA control sounds appealing chances are that like other attempt to biologically control pests we may just f*** it up and make things worse.

so how come these people had rat detection strips and not good nature/doc 200 etc traps permanently set????
surely a triggered trap with dead rat under it is better indication than foot prints and is proactive from the getgo.....

one week in my new job in quarantine, we have zero chance of being any bloody thing free by forever ! It's all about keep nasty shit out of NZ!

From what I've seen not many people give a shit about what they send to NZ! We've had brown stink bugs and yesterday filled 2 x 20 litre buckets of dirt off one piece of mining equipment along with 240 kg of fruit / food stuffs off a super yacht!

But don't worry we have crowd funding to raise funds to try and remove the wasp problem plaguing our country! The same wasps that are in direct competition with our nectar loving birds!

Get your rat detecting dogs down to that island and sort it pronto!
    Nil durum volenti !!
