    Sandfly repellent

A mate and I are heading to the Mavora lakes on boxing day for a week of some fishing but mainly rest and relaxation
We have also extended an invitation our friends , Mr Monteith's, and Mr Jameson.
So I imagine there will be alot of time spent sitting about resting and talking complete crap, which, will give the Sandflies time to attack, they hate me.

We have heard the the Sandflies in that area are a big as sharks so I was wondering , apart from covering ourselves head to toe in Diesel.
What is the no compromise, best bar none Sandfly repellent money can buy.

Don't go for the diesel, surefire way to go and grow a bladder cancer.

Mix baby oil (or any vege oil, as it is cheaper) with Dettol, 50:50 mixture. The two components do separate out in the bottle, so shake together just before applying.

I've watched sandflies up at Lake Rotoroa (bad spot there, worse than the West Coast) land on my skin with that stuff applied. No bite, they just writhe around on your skin, not knowing what hit them. I guess they are in the habit of licking/tasting your skin before they chomp down on it.

    Vitamin B.

Eat lots of marmite before and during.

    And:

Ignore them and they'll ignore you.
Don't drink coffee - they LOVE coffee.

Aside from that, there's bugger all you can do.

    Might see you there.

if you are sitting around camp try burning 3 or 4 citronella lamps or those green coils upwind from where you are sitting.

It also melts watch straps and is apparently toxic.

Deet is far and away the best. Not good for your health so put it on your clothing and it creates a repellant 'force field' You will be like the USS Enterprise with your shields up and the sandflies are the Klingons

Not sue if the Mavora Lakes are the place to go for R&R over the Christmas / New Year period, hundreds of people hooning around on quads and dirt bikes, so busy that DoC have a seasonal Ranger there.

However, some good fishing to be had after dark - think mice !

I was up that way a few days ago - no sand flies to report but if looking for something that works just get Bushmans with 80% DEET - a pea size drop should cover hands and head all day.

In a civilized and cultivated country, wild animals only continue to exist at all when conserved by the sportsman. The excellent people who protest against all hunting, and consider sportsmen as enemies of wildlife are wholly ignorant of the fact that in reality the genuine sportsman is by all odds the most important factor in keeping wild creatures from total extinction.

Oh yes, forgot, don't wear shorts, do wear socks, prefer long sleeves.

And something else, get some non-sedating antihistamines from the pharmacy. Take regularly while in the warzone as some will always get through your defenses so you need a back stop. Reduces the itching significantly.

Bushmans is hands down the best repellent.
I live and play on the coast and abroad.
It works. Higher the deet content the better.
Dettol doesn't last once you sweat etc.

Look for a brand that contains di methyl phthalate, Dimp or dmp were two its as good or better than deet. I dont think citronella candles etc work at all. Even with a repellent tight fitting clothing is a good idea.
Spandex leotards and earplugs, nothing worse than some of the bastards getting into your ear instant tinnitus and itchy as well.

yeah the baby oil and Dettol 50/50 worked brilliant when I was a rafting guide. Just beware of the way it enhances the sun rays thou
