    A short True Story

About 30 years ago a friend of mine was on the lookout to buy a cargo ship that he could use to freight stuff around the the South Pacific Islands. He soon found one which had plied the Baltic Sea and it was in pretty good knick, he duly purchased it and then had some repairs and modifications done on it. He needed a small crew so enlisted some friends and relo’s, just so happened that one of them had a masters ticket.

Just before they were ready to sail her back home the shipping agent called him to say that they could arrange a cargo for the ship to transport to this side of the globe but they had to be in Belgium (I think) to load on a certain date. They thought this would be easy money so chugged off to Belgium to pick it up.

The cargo turned out to be a large consignment of armaments, rockets, mortars and other stuff that goes kaboom. All they had to do was deliver the goods to I think Taiwan. They set sail and sailed down the coast and into the Amex, thru the Suez Canal and Indian Ocean, off the coast of India they had some sort of breakdown and needed some parts so headed to the nearest port which turned out to be Colombo in Sri Lanka. Now this was in the middle of there civil war with the Tamil Tigers.

They arrange a local shipping agent to handle the arrivals paperwork and to source the parts they needed. They tie up to the wharf, customs board the ship to do there thing and discover the cargo they are carrying is pretty potent stuff and decide to confiscate the cargo and arrest the ship, they determined that the cargo was destined for the Tamil Tigers.

Some months passed and the crew were getting desperate so hatched a plan to sail off in the dead of night leaving there cargo behind, letting there insurance company sort it out. They managed to sail back to NZ and on to Rarotonga to start there shipping business. The skipper wrote a book and dedicates a chapter or two about this escapade.

Wifes stepfather was sailing around the world in the 70s and he was cruising around ceylon as it used to be called and they
came around a bay straight into a secret naval base. They got arrested for spying lost their boat and eventually were set free never to see the boat again.
