    South Island "freedom " camping

    One for our Southern men.
What are the rules like down your way with regards to so called freedom camping ?
In my area, it is very strictly controlled, with on the spot fines. Not a very warm welcome to some overseas visitors.

Same around the tourist spots down here. But I hate the crowds anyway.

That is Aly, unless you have a horse, cart and are totally obnoxious. In which case you may freedom camp where ever the hell you want including on the courthouse lawn,

I like the fact that the facilities are not everywhere, that way they don't get used as dumping grounds for everything else other than fecal matter.

If your not in the main towns you can get away with it as there is a lot of ground for them to cover, and there is also quite a few DoC camp grounds throughout. We did get kicked out of Wanaka into the Cardrona valley once.

May not be very welcoming for the tourists but the ones before them have to take a lot of the responsibility for making it this way.
