The factory loaded trial version of MacAfee anti virus on my new lappy runs out shortly.

For something that's free, AVG Free 2014 is fit for purpose and I use to extensively in my line of work.

Sorry, should have said I am running win 8.1
Eset nod gets good reviews and I had it running on my old desk top with no known problems.
Will have a look at the others suggested. I hate Norton too Konev

ESET Nod used to be the dog's danglies but the offerings from Kaspersky and Bit Defender have outscored them consistently over the past couple of years. That said it's still suitable for the task.

Make sure you get something like Pen E Cillin Pengy it works against all the viruses I have had from the common flu on up to galloping knob rot. Ha ha ha ha. Looked through 8 Windows once but got arrested.

As mentioned, I wouldn't bother replacing it with anything. Windows Defender is really good.

Thanks Chalkey, I had just discovered that is built in on win 8.1 when I was looking for the essentials, which is no more apparently
    Will give it a go.
    Thanks for all the input
