We spent a few nights tenting there 2107 New years eve. Very busy, decent facilities, wasn't the cheapest but reasonable prices. Short walk to the lake for a swim.

Ruataniwha Holiday camp is a good cheap option. Probably very busy at this time of year though. Salmon on the door step too
Alpine lodge in St Arnaud is a great place to stay but not sure of the room prices. Worth a look though. What are you wanting to hunt near the lakes?

Ruataniwha Holiday camp fishermans cabins the cheapest. Small and only couple of bunk sets in them, but sweet as for an over nighter

If you want somewhere close to Nelson Lakes then consider
Accommodation ยป St Arnaud Nelson Lakes National Park

Or take the tent and camp at the DOC campsites at St Arnaud. 3 to choose from.

Owen River Tavern and Motels is a bit further out but an option

    Riverside Holiday Park (Murchison)

Plenty of cheap places in Nelson itself but a bit a travel to get back to

Yip agree with Ruataniwha, stay there all the time. Go check out the canals, rumours of a 25kg trout being caught there last week.
All I want to do is to turn deer, into poop.

Ok. Leatham/Branch rivers are worth a look for a chamios. A couple of huts you can drive to as well. Hell, why not come back via Hamner/Tophouse road. That is a great trip if you have a 4x4 with huts/hunting along the way.

And a few easy access huts to lay your head if needed.

We will be in a shiney 4x4 part of the reason the first stage of our trip we are flying in. I will have a look on the map at Hamner/Tophouse road. Only just been issued with a south island passport

It goes through Rainbow Station (it is a toll road, $25/vehicle I think). See the DOC website, search Rainbow road. Well worth the effort.
