UK firearm licencing - anyone tried / done it...?

Heading over with the family later this year for a "couple of years", and have read on line regarding the differing licenses available there, ie SGC (ShotGun) and FAC (Firearm Certificates) - problem is I'd like to take over a centre fire - but seems it may be the arse-about way to do things - land in the UK in possession without a valid UK license... and like here, need to be vetted and security checked, naturally...

    yeah, nah..??

I am pretty sure that they wont issue a license unless you already have a permission to shoot, and even then the cal they will license for depends on several other factors, such as species, land area etc.
And bloody good luck taking a firearm with you through a UK airport

You will need to have somewhere to shoot it, either a club or permission to shoot on private land. Also unless they give you an open certificate straight off (which I doubt) any private land will have to be cleared by your firearms officer. You will also have to have somewhere so store your firearm, which will also have to be checked by your Firearms officer.

My advice would be to download the firearms licence application from the police website and join the National Rifle association at Bisley.

Email me (matthew.caisley@btinternet.com) if you get stuck or have any questions and I'll
    See if I can help

    Good luck!

You need UK based referees that have known you for at least 2 years. Permission to hunt on farms is pretty easy to get, especially rabbits and there's heaps of those monk/roe deer over there. Where are you going to be based?

Hmm, cheers for the replies, people.!!

I'll be based in Kent.. The Father in law is a shooter, and has suitable storage, though, will be wanting to have my own eventually.... he's more of a shotty shooter, and he 'goes down to the marsh...' and pops a few birds on the fly... whereas Im more the centrefire/rimfire advocate....
