    Wellington on the cheap

    Hi all, we are looking at going down to Wellington for 3 nights next week. Have been looking at the Top 10 holiday park in Lower Hutt to stay at. Anyone know what this is like? We want to go to the Southward car museum, the zoo and Te papa. Is there anything else you recommend to do while down there? Cheap if possible. Also somewhere nice to eat. We are 2x adults 1x15 yr boy and 1x 6 yr girl.

    Cable car, waterfront, by Te Papa. Good to hear you going to Southwards, believe it is really struggling and may not be there much longer.

    Drive or walk up mount Victoria. Walk around waterfront when you do the papa. Go for a wonder around Cuba street if you like expensive coffee

    Yeah nightime when it's well dark, find

    Glen Rd

    in Kelburn - drive down there to where the street stops and it hits up against the Botanic Garden - take enough torches for everyone.
    As you look at the paths at the entrance take the lower left-hand side path and follow that downhill - for the next 300m or so you will see glow worms in the banks next to the path and across the creek
    By the time you get down to the duckpond you turn around and come back

    Remember not to shine torches directly at the glow worms.

    Cost = free

    For entertainment in this town the decision at Manners St is either go Courtenay Pl for young cashed up drinkers or up Cuba St for the hipsters- unfortunately you have chosen to visit when the town is dead but a visit out to the Mirimar theatre The Roxy if you're into that whole LOTR thing or Art Deco might suit you(walk upstairs for the full experience), alternatively a cheap form of entertainment is to park up near the airport and watch the planes get blown sideways when they try to land - if you want to mountainbike there are plenty of good local trails..Food will be limited to what's open but at a basic level the kebab burgers at Abrakebabra in Manners are cheap and filling, the Southern food at Sweet Mothers Kitchen in Courtenay is good and the chips at Te Kouaka on Willis are great - you know the general rule of food - if you see a queue, join it.

    If you want to tent camp, have a look at Harcourt Park in Upper Hutt, or alternatively Otaki Forks, but that is a bit further away.

    Somes island is a good day trip.

    Botanical gardens or Wiltons Otari bush (native plants) both good and free.

    I find Zoos extremely depressing.... Zealandia has just dropped their prices. Do the exhibition centre as well, well worth it. Budget at least half day for both exhibition centre and alley, lots of stuff to see.

    When you go to Te Papa, do the walk from Oriental bay to the city (TSB arena).

    Eastbourne is a nice drive.

    If you want an easy family tramp, head out to Catchpool area in Rimutaka Forest Park, other side of Wainuiomata.

    Roti Chennai in Victoria Street. Cheap South Indian fare. Not at all spicy... Try the lamb sukka.
