I would ask the judge to take a long hard look at the example he is setting if charges went ahead. I would also enforce the fact that said burglar fell over with the fright of me catching him and bumped his head.

I would have put my arm around him given him a cuddle, discussed his up bringing and explained the wrongs of breaking into my car, and then hit him!!!

I would buy the bloke who punched the thief a beer. What happened to citizens arrest? It's not like the thief stopped and waited for police to arrive. What was he supposed to do, watch him disappear into the distance to be told by police that car theft is a low priority crime and be given a number for the insurance claim?

In the meantime we have totally lost sight of what the "felon" received in legal punishment. I presume he was also able to avail himself of ACC due to the beating injuries.

Well he couldn't be charged with theft because he never got the car. I would think the only thing that happened to him was the beating, better than nothing I spose. I bet the crim has learnt his lesson thou.......... next time he will be armed.

    What a fucking joke!!!
We need some judges with some balls that just say fuck you, you got what you deserved, maybe you'll think twice before you try it again - case dismissed.

Burglaries are up 50% in Nelson region according to the wife just now....hardly surprising when you know the cops are never going to come to a burg and now apparently if the poor cunt you are ripping off catches you he will have to pay you 600 bucks!

    The country's fucked.

If I was made to pay the $600, I'd spend even more to find out where the Judge lives and pass the details on to the poor sobbing thief!

That would be the best $600 I would ever have to part with.
I'd drip feed it to him at a $1/week.

Hopefully that thief got all six hundred dollars worth of a beating.

As the piece says, the incident would not have happened if he had not been breaking in to the vehicle, the ball was always in the thieves court.

I would ask if I could just stump up $1200 and go give him another thumping
