WTF & we wonder why its getting difficult to send firearms....

Heard today from an extremely reliable source that some bloody (not the right word) dopey (still not the right word) retailer sent a VERY expensive handgun to a rural address in a courier satchel.....

Adresse was "like wheres my parcel ????,"

"We don't know Sir its in the NZ Post rural network now"

"WTF its a squillion dollar pistol"

"Sorry Sir not our problem, we weren't informed it was, if we had you would have had to come here, as you are now to pick it up, BTW insurance cover is only $1500"

Seriously WTF were they thinking sending a Pistol in a satchel, come on this can't be their first rodeo..

I can guarantee its not the first time this has happened, they advertise pistols, MSSA's etc for sale.

Yes I'm pissed off this could have had grave consequences for all of us sending firearms ....

I hope someone reads them the riot act....somehow I doubt it will make a difference

yeah they need to get done for that one. I would be surprised if they even get the $1500 as they dont ship firearms.

Yes they do ship firearms....but only if they "know they are" which they don't, ESPECIALLY if its in a satchel.... a big rectangular box is pretty obvious but a satchel not so much...

At least it isnt the new owner who will suffer any financial loss if it goes missing - the seller contracted NZ Post to ship it so the contract is between them.

But if the seller is a well-known Christchurch based dealer we can expect honesty and decency to prevail - cant we now ........

Whats the issue here again? Mail went missing? Mail goes missing everyday in this country. Is it because it was a handgun? It can still go missing even if it has the big orange "firearm" sticker on it. Some would say it could be more likely to walk if it is advertised as a firearm.. Declaring it as such just covers the monetary issue if its lost, doesnt guarantee that its going to be delivered though.

Question. Was it in its hard case which was then placed in a satchel or was it just a handgun loose in a satchel?

To be clear it was a Nth Island retailer & NZ post handle rural deliveries for a few courier companies.

If the courier driver doesn't know it's a firearm, they quite easy could've just left it in the letter box or by the back door. Hardly the way you expect a B category firearm to be handled.
By not declaring it as a firearm it will be treated with the same amount of "care" as a second hand pair of shoes, which considering the process one needs to follow to get their B cat licences vs the easy of buying a pair of shoes.

Kiwi Greg has every right to be pissed of by this.

As I understand it there is basically zero chance of a firearm going missing now if it is sent as a firearm, they can't be sent to a private address & mostly depot pick up only...

They leave the fucking things at the back door anyway even if it requires a signature! Depends on who the driver is and what mood they are in that day.

They still have to be couriered to the depot by a human so theres still the same chance it can go missing. Its just unlucky that it was a handgun, i assume its been recovered?

Im more interested in how it was packaged.

They can't do that now if it is declared as a firearm, it has stickers on it & is especially tracked & notified between branches

unbefaaarkinleavable.......... how can a courier take/transport a firearm anyway????? surely they must have to have firearms licence to be in control of package????
the opertunity for freight(which a coupiered package is) to go walkies is just so open for a dishonest person that its not funny.... we handled ammunition when I was dealing with freight but not firearms.....how are couriers exzempt????

sounds like dumb and dumber were on dispatch duty that week.

Couriers are exempt from needing a firearms licence to transport them

The point is, it was a pistol sent in a satchel worth a heap of $$$ & not declared as a firearm so could have very well been left on a doorstep etc

It didn't go missing which was a God send, if it had most likely there would have been a monumental shit storm & rightly so.

This would have most likely led to even more restrictions.....
