22 LR head seperation

this happened on boxing day while sighting in my BRNO model 2, loud crack and smoke from the receiver but the projectile still hit the target in the right place. I rang the gun shop where I bought the ammo and they were very interested and were going to call the manufacturers nz agent.
the ammo was subs but seemed a little erratic and a few of the rounds were definitely super sonic by the crack they made.
I had fired 18 rounds prior to this happening with no problem, grouping well. look forward to your comments and hopefully gun doc see this post

What make ammo?

I had similar back in the 80’s(?).
‘Whisper’ by Winchester, blew the extractor claw off my Sako 22.
And peppered my eye and face with brass fragments.

Same experience in my Gevarm 22, rims regularly blew out.

winchester subsonic is the ammo

IMO Winchester these days is total crap.
The old stuff was ok. But the new stuff won't even chamber in my T1xs.
Stay away from it. Stick with CCI, Eley or Norma/RWS.

Is it the new USA made stuff. I have some whisper which was Aussie made, never had a problem, just looked a fired case & appears to be some signs.

Yep the USA made Winchester is absolute garbage. Not worth even trying.

the mouth of that case looks jagged....wonder if they are fraction longer than normal and jamming??

Had similar with the browning BPR ammo a couple of years ago. No case separation but the worst for different noises and misfires. Some went crack some went really crack and some went pop. Shouldve taken the packet back.
Think they are made by winchester USA too

I have done a little research on the smith & wesson forum and it has become obvious that this problem is world wide and always with new winchester ammo!
something to do with a recent ammo shortage and consequent ramp up of production.
I now consider myself lucky that the little BRNO model 2 did its thing and vented all that gas from the over charge of powder into the magazine and away from my pretty face:cool:

i used winchester subs for probably 35 years until i went to CCI subs about 6 months ago. I have had a JW15 with over barrel suppressor for probably 12-15 years and the winchester has gotten really erratic in recent years. Some rounds sonic booming, the rifile seemed to get louder. It looks as though the brass has not been properly annealed before the forming process was done and it has work hardened when the rim was bunted, therefore unable to withstand the pressure of discharge. A factory quality control issue. Take the fired/ruptured case and balance of the packet back to the shop for a follow-up.
