    Hi there
Please excuse the inexperience and stupid question but is there a difference between. 308 and .308 win or is it just a name. Cheers

Same thing, .308 Norma Magnum is different but quite rare.

Yep .308 and .308win (308 Winchester) are one and the same beast.

Come to mention it 7.62x51mm NATO is also the same .... ish.
This is the military designation for the commercial 308win cartridge.

    Cheers

Same thing. A lot of cartridges are named after the company the commercialised them or their inventer.
308 Winchester, 7mm Remmington magnum, 35 Whelen (although I believe the 35 was named in honour of Townsend
Whelen, not because he came up with the idea).
Experience. What you get just after you needed it.

    .308 is the caliber
win(chester) is the cartridge and chamber shape and size
    as per 223 rem(ington),243 win(chester) 6mm warren page-pooper etc
Most western european and yank calibers that begin with a 30 use .308 bullets such as 30/30,308,30-06,300 win mag and 300 weatherby mag etc so its the cartridge(chambering) that differs.
