Just read a book, they use moly bullets as first shot the same.
Said police shooters were going moly too because of no first shot flyer.
My 308 cold clean barrel will shoot about a fist size low at 400m or 4 inches low or 1 click on the dial. 2 or 3 nice and quiet subsonic rounds will foul the barrel enough to sort that clean barrel discrepancy out and without disturbing the area.
Across about 5 of my rifles I get no real impact difference at 100m but I do get a velocity reduction on a clean bore shot. it's not much but would equate to around an extra click (¼ moa) of elevation at 400m. 6.5Cm and .223.
a lot of rifles vary - target time will tell you how much simple as that - I have had rifles that dont vary with a cold shot and some do - so time spent on targets is not time wasted - know your rifle - some I have had need one thru before back to zero - others no - get the targets out and check

For what its worth all 4 of the Howa 223s I tested had what most people would call carbon rings, all very similar. Two of them shot well, one ok and one shite, and it still shot like shite after it was cleaned!
when I was shooting full bore in 303 days some of the shooters had a lead round they put thru first since one was allowed two sighters not a problem - but DOC shoot could not do that but my Tikka 222 590 thankfully did not change zeros - neither did my Remington 222 and my 788 308 never moves but my Tikka LSA 55 308 yes first shot would be slightly high to left and second shot back to correct zero go figure
Just get it to hit 2 inches above a 1 inch square at 100 yds and your good to go to 250-300 yards hunting. You're hunting, you're not a "seal team 6 sniper". Well that only my opinion. Gets expensive if you want to be a legend
Worth the test in future some oil shouldn’t change a thing just be sure it’s patched out dry iv found clean makes no difference in two rifles where as another it takes a good amount of rounds to settle in again after a good solvent scrub cold bore shots shouldn’t be an issue otherwise every hunting rifle would be useless iv seen cold bore shifts and for me I’d rebarrel no good reason for it to happen

Cleaning is such a controversial topic. In my opinion, pushing a few poly patches through is not cleaning. Put a bore scope down it and you'll see what I mean.
Run a dry patch through before you go hunting and you'll be fine.
If you do a full solvent clean and remove all the copper and carbon fowling you may notice a difference. My old Howa 308 used to need (in my opinion) cleaning after about 80 shots as accuracy started to suffer. On the other hand my old Sako A7 7mm rem mag hated being clean so I would leave it as long as I could handle before cleaning again.
Both would have still taken deer at probably 200 meters either way, just not up to my standard on paper in their cleaned/uncleaned state.
Patch out the chamber too :thumbsup:
