    Anyone chrono a T3x in 6.6 Crd using Hornady 143 ELD-x

    Hi all
    Bit of long shot (pun intended) but has anyone got some velocity figures on your bog standard T3x in 6.5 creedmoor using the Hornady 143gr Eldx factory ammo?
    I’m trying to stretch its legs a little and step away from being a rather unsuccessful bush basher and go for more open country and just wanted to work out all that trajectory stuff, I know the pack comes with some drop info but test gun barrel is longer than the factory barrel on my Tikka (I forget both figures atm) so thought some accurate velocities would be better than a rule of thumb of every inch shorter = X fps loss type stuff.
    Thanks in advance
    FP

    It would probably be best to chrono it out of your rifle

    This should give you something to work with. Tested on Labradar

    16" = 2375
    18" = 2455
    24" = 2590

    Above speeds are an average across 3 shot groups with factory precision hunter ammo in 3 different tikka t3 creedmoors ive dealt with, all with factory barrels (shortend in the case of the 16" & 18"). Definately on the slow side compared to what the velocity on the packet suggests.

    Assuming you have a 22" barrel, somewhere around 2550 will be a good starting point.

    I saw the title for the thread, and thought to myself even the 6.5 crud guys themselves are trying to upsize their choices now haha

    If you don't have a chrono, you can confirm by measuring out an actual real 500 meters of range somewhere (if you have a formed range that goes past 300 that's ideal as the distances should be laid out) and then checking you rifle is on at 100m shoot at 500m. There will be a lot of drop, and you want a decent stable aiming point with enough paper under the aiming point to record the point of impact. The drop amount when entered into a ballistic app with the rest of the bullet info should be able to back calculate what the muzzle velocity is within reason. You need a top notch day weather wise for this though, calm and still and a nice stable shooting position with accurate info. Otherwise you need to expend a LOT (10+) rounds to get a decent average, plus a fouler and warming shots and then ensuring your barrel temp doesn't get to high so everything is as close to the same conditions each time. This is pretty much the old fashioned way of doing things before chrono's - there are formula about to work out speed of the projectile from distance and drop so you don't even need the app.

    But - I'd ask about and get hold of a chrony as it is so much easier it's worth the hassle of tracking one down. Also, once you go down this track there will be changes you have to make like not being able to get a component or changing powder batches, or even checking velocity as a factor of barrel wear so it's worthwhile getting access to the right kit to do it.
