is there any point in coming with a hunting rifle? none of my rifle's are target style with gucci optics.
Why not, it’s about precision and accuracy
I am going with a hunting / varmint rig
Will be interesting as know a few top blokes going and no key board jockeys / knowa’s 👍
Looking at the rules all rifles are competing against each other, hunting rifle to target rifles, the rifle rules are pretty simply, 104mm fore end width, 12 kg max weight, up to 30cal with 7000 joules any power scope and NO spotting scopes on the firing line.
You get to sight in and prove you can land all shots within 1.125MRAD at 300 failure to do so may mean disqualification with no refund.
You shoot 3 x 5 shot groups on a IBS 300yd target at 300 and 3 x 200m score targets at 300 and max time of 7 min for each target.
The 200m score target has a 1" 10 ring, 1 13/16" 9 ring and a 1/8th dot
The 300yd group target has a 1.5" 10 ring, 3" 9 ring, 4 1/2" 8 ring
Some of the locals will be using Benchrest rifles with 45+ power scopes so they can see their bullets at 300 and hold accordingly might be some using F class rifles and some using PRS rifles.
If you want to see what a Benchrest rifle can do at 300m for a 5 shot group have a look at the below link, you will find the HV 100, 200 & 300 results, scroll down to the 300 results interesting reading

and if you wanted to see what a LV rifle can do, although most if not all in the HV class would have been using a LV rifle anyway click on the below link

You have to be in to win and as it states only one person wins
Thinking about a hunting rifle vs a Benchrest rifle would be like your everyday car against a F1 car
In 1973 Warren Page wrote a book called The Accurate Rifle. The third chapter is called The Quarter-Minute Rifle. The last few words of that chapter are these. "The question as to whether or not we have actually achieved the 1/4 minute rifle is a matter of academics, of quibbling if you will. We've made a carload of 'em, but only a few 1/4-munute men, it seems to me."
Rifle building and optics have certainly come along way since 1973. Factory rifles would certainly be of better average quality now. I have seen a lot of custom action rifles being built for hunting in NZ. They would definitely be capable of 1/4-minute groups and I see people posting pics of them all the time. Purpose built target rifles also would be expected to make the 1/4-minute grade. Whether or not the shooter can drive the rifle is another matter even today.
The 300m Tack Driver Showdown is first and foremost about getting various disciplines together for a fun shoot. A place to share ideas and view equipment. At one of the recent USA Tack Driver tournaments one competitor came 1st is Group but 21st in Score. I find this very interesting as he was shooting Group, then Score targets one after the other. 10 targets in total. How do you go down the ranking so far just by switching from shooting a group, to shooting 5 bullseyes on one target? You are still shooting from the same bench, at the same distance, with the same gear.
At the end of the day though there will be only one Champion. You have to be in to win. If you don't win the big silver trophy, you still have the chance to win a screamer group or score prize, win the cash option or pick up a sponsors prize in the random draw.
