Thread: Checking zero on rifle

Hi just wondering if anyone does this or is it frowned upon _if hunting on doc land do any of you set a target up say at the end of the day and check zero on rifle obviously youd set up in a safe place

I don't shoot any rounds in or near the hunting areas mate, bar the hunting of course. I just grab the key and pop up to the local range to check my zero etc

Not to keen on firing unnecessary shots where I’m hunting

safe backdrop...preferably on edge of area and away from hunting ground if possible....suppressors have made this much easier/more acceptable than it was before,only if you really have to...popping the bolt out and doing a rough bore sight after a knock gives pretty good idea if its still right.

I often do, in hunting areas where there is no one around and unlikely to be animals present.

Hunting area is a lot closer than you nearest range sadly

once i happy with my sighting in at the range i set the bore sighter up and log the position on the grid, then its just a case of checking with the bore sighter before i head off for a hunt

I carry a couple of trail boss subsonic round ,if I think the scope or red dot is out I can check it without spooking the area,I know the subsonic is 3in low at 50m from hi power zero @ 100 m.also good if a hare pops up or pesky camp possum keeps me awake.

I don’t do it much but there’s nothing wrong with firing just 1 or 2 shots in a safe place as long as you don’t endanger or frighten others. It’s ethical for a hunter to check his sights if he has some doubt. A full sight in , load or trajectory test session or match against your mate would be different. Your permit is for hunting not bulk target shooting.
