Some rifles are produced with a deliberate pressure point somewhere along the barrel channel. This is a cheap way of getting basic acceptable accuracy. Removal of this pressure point ALONG WITH A FULL BEDDING JOB will likely cure your problem. If you are not confident to undertake that job yourself then seek the expertise of a competent gunsmith. Good luck.

@dannyb is it a wooden stock rifle?
Also dose it have a magazine?
If so try shooting with the floor plate open. It could be a pinched mag well. Had this on a BSA cf2.
The question with the wooden stock is that they get compressed if there aren’t any pillars there.
But the guys are on track and I think you will find that it’s a bedding job.
    I used Nathan Fosters kit.
Never done one before but just followed the instructions and made sure I did it nice and slow and read the instructions 100 times.
It worked.....so did me sweet glands
It's all fun and games till Darthvader comes along
I respect your beliefs but don't impose them on me.

Ok so I pulled the action and cleaned under it.
There was a bit of debri in there but not anything major. I notice that there appears to be a bit of hot glue where the recoil lug sits.
I can now slide I bit of paper from the fore almost right up to the action, the paper binds just so slightly at the fore end but not enough to damage the paper. Where as previously I couldn't as it started to rip the paper.
Thoughts? Haven't shot it again yet.

If it was me, and I'm a rough cnut and know nothing about Winchesters, I'd sand that channel smooth, it almost looks like a patch of rubbing to one side in that first pic

What about building up the hot glue where the recoil lug sits, as it appears to have degraded over time from what I can see ? Failing that anyone wanna do a bedding job ?

Hot glue is not a suitable bedding compound imo, far to flexible.

Can you get a close up of the first 2/3 inches of the stock at the muzzle end, few angles

I would be happy to bed it for you if you were in the south island.

Just looking at that pic I can see a number of possible issues.

Mmm do you think that's rubbing in there? Is it smoother than the rest of the channel? Sure looks like it and may be the/a reason for the flyer.
