Gong indicator

I would just go with what Stocky has linked, it would cost you more than in parts to DIY. I could do it three different ways myself without having to ask google a thing, but if I wanted a hit indicator, I would just buy the Delta Mike one listed.

Still, I totally understand the need for project, so am happy to entertain the idea of DIY. And on that front, I still vote optical beam. A target gong is a hostile environment for anything electrical. You will end up shooting wires off or with repeated strikes, electrical components will eventually fail. The optical beam can be at removed from where the bullets go, and will be as reliable and adjustable as you like. It will also be plug and play as and when you want to swap it to a different target gong.
You won’t need to do any alterations to the gong itself.

The idea being that after a hit that momentarily triggers the switch, the led light stays on for a few seconds to indicate a hit. Whole thing mounted in a plastic box on the back of the gong (or another piece of steel) to protect it.


disconnect (unsolder) the push switch and connect wires to ball switch (or could use microswitch - I'll sketch up a couple of ideas) connect relay to LED with LED current regulator, whole thing can be powered from small usb powerbank. too complicated?

Awesome I'll post some pictures as a member gave me a thing very similar but it took a hard wack and some wires came off it may make sense to someone like yourself

they work very well even at 930, which is our longest target. They are clearly visible with the naked eye

You need some sort of holder
We have lengths of SS pipe bolted onto the target with an 18mm plywood chunk to protect the light from splashing
The lights just get strapped onto the pipe

Yeah I think you are right. The Hornady option look like the way to go for a cheap indicator

what about mounting on the back of the gong (protected), with an angled piece of polished stainless (or plastic mirror) at an angle above it on the end of a rod, like a wee simple periscope

might want a slightly convex mirror so its less position sensitive... like a travel make-up/shaving mirror maybe?
