    Grouping?

    Hi guys,

I am pretty new to shooting and see quite a few of you shooting pretty tight groups.I was wondering if those groups were normally shot from a bench with rests or shot off a bipod?
The best that I can manage so far is a 30mm spread at 100 yards with my 308 off a bipod.

30mm grouping - at 100m that is a dead deer.
it is the first shot with a cold barrel that counts in the hills

There are lots of body positions but the fundamentals that will tighten your groups up are as follows (in my opinion, as a good starting point).
    • Spread you base (legs out to the sides) so you are stable
    • Relax. If you have tightness or tension in any muscle anywhere, or you are using some muscle to support yourself and its straining, re-position. Keep shuffling round on the ground intill your comfortable. Tension anywhere in your body will open the group up.
    • If its a Harris bipod or copy check there is even tension in the legs (good luck with that). Load up your bipod. As in put weight on it/lean on it (hard hold).
    • Natural point of aim. Natural point of aim is where your completely relaxed and comfortable, as above, and the cross hairs rest on the right place on the target. To test this, close your eyes, relax and open them again, if your cross hairs are still on target, you have it right. NEVER just lean one way or the other and muscle the cross hairs on the target. Move your whole body so your in a new, comfortable position and achieve proper natural point of aim. You will get lazy, you will muscle the cross hairs over, and you will throw the shot.
    • The rest is breathing and trigger control. Keep both gentle, supple and smooth and you are on the right track.

Could be your 308 only shoots 30mm groups.
Well said - do everything listed

Tight groups are relative. I saw some grouping at Riverhead on the weekend that would make some people weep, but the shooter had a grin from ear to ear.

Yup, spot on. Only thing I do different is, I do not load my bipod. Dont forget to hold your tongue right. It will tighten you groups another 5%

I find that loading the Bi-Pod reduces muzzle jump as well as helping to tighten/firm everything up.

I'm afraid my old back is struggling, might have to take up yoga or some such.

30mm at 100 yards, what type of rifle? as that's not to shabby a group if its a stock rifle with commercial ammo. I would be happy if my FR8 did 2moa-I would be bloody happy!!! Your shooting of a bipod as well. Try a rest if you want to see what your rifle is capable off. Unless you have a target rifle I would be damned pleased with those groups especially if its consistent!

You are shooting at close to MOA

    Cheers

its a std Remmy 700 ,although it is an R5, using BVAC 168 gr Amaxs, which is made from recycled brass.

So far I've only had a 3-9 Redfield, may need something with more magnification for my reumy old eyes.

Did you measure outside to outside? i like to cheat and measure centre to centre lol. You're probably almost under 25mm
Like everyone has said above, you're doing pretty well in my books.

I find getting a consistent sight picture helps heaps, by that I mean having your cross hairs at exactly the same position when the shot breaks, as the previous shot (obvious as). I like these targets Free Targets for Shooters!. I don't focus on the bull, I check my natural POA, get my breathing sussed, then make sure the cross hairs are symmetrical with the 4 black squares IE: the "white" is even by all squares, if you can follow me. I find I shoot some really decent groups with that method, and you can get away with a few little imperfections in your fundamentals.

I take it your using a rear rest it just wasn't mentioned.
high power scope helps. and like what beavis is saying, what your aiming at helps. instead of a round circle, where your aiming somewhere hopefully in the same spot in the middle try a tee shape, or on the corner of a square, right angles.

Are we writing of the Mauser lock, German barrel, Spanish FR8 of the 50's?
Just curious as I have one, but hear so little mention of them.

Yes that's the very one! The cetme barrel. Very rare around here I reckon. Nice in handy. Have you looked inside of the cleaning kit tube/bayonet support tube-some guys find interesting things inside. Mine just smelled of tobacco as that is where the Spanish soldiers kept there bacco and pics of there girlfriends.

If it shot as well as Dedubyah's Remmy I would be very happy!

    Here's a couple of pics.
